Mountain Hawks fall just short vs. Davidson

Head coach Liz Ota expressed her feelings following the contest. “Unfortunately, it did not go our way today in terms of getting the win, but I thought our effort was much better (than yesterday). Davidson played a nice game, they really performed beautifully in the midfield and their goalie played very well.” Ota continued, “This was a good effort for us, we just couldn’t finish as many shots as we would have liked. We shot high a couple times high or low, when we should have done the opposite.”
Chamberlain put Lehigh up 1-0 just 2:23 into the contest off of an assist from Tenety, but Palmer came back and tied the affair at one with her 12th goal of the season at the 24:14 mark. Sophomore Christy Smith then put the Mountain Hawks up 2-1 with goal number-seven on the season at the 16:17 mark. Before Lehigh could even blink an eye though, the Wildcats tied the game again, just 15 seconds later on a score by Palmer.
Sarah Walter then put the visitors in front by one with a goal of her own at the 14:27 mark of the first half. MacIntyre netted her team-leading 26th score of the season with just 2:41 to go, off of a free position shot, and the game was tied at three. But Davidson was not done for the half, as Emily Diefendorf scored with only 36 ticks left, sending the visitors to a 4-3 lead at the intermission.
Eloise Grose netted the second half’s first goal at the 23:14 mark giving Davidson a 5-3 lead, before Chamberlain scored her second goal of the day to pull Lehigh back to within one at 5-4. Gilbert then gave the Wildcats some breathing room with back-to-back goals in a span of just 1:46 as they went up 7-4. MacIntyre answered right back for the Brown and White though, scoring her 27th goal of the year with 13:08 to go. The two teams then went scoreless until McGrath found the back of the net with just 1:18 to go. Davidson won the ensuing draw control, but Lehigh forced a turnover and worked the ball up field. Lissy King had a shot from deep just before the final buzzer, but it sailed wide and Davidson emerged victorious.
Lehigh out shot its counterpart 33-20 for the day and scooped up 25 ground balls to the Wildcats 15. Davidson was seven of 10 on clear attempts, while the Mountain Hawks were five of eight. Kyle Begina made eight saves in goal for the home team and Davidson goal keeper Leslie Smith put on quite a show of her own, sending back 17 Mountain Hawk shots, many of which were from close range.
Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks welcome the Pioneers of Sacred Heart to the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 3:30.
