PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh and Penn split their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Meiklejohn Stadium, with the Mountain Hawks taking game one 6-2, before the Quakers emerged 5-1 in the nightcap.  Sophomore Joe Matteo went the distance in Lehigh’s game one win, tossing all seven innings, surrendering just three hits with four strikeouts along the way.  Following today’s action, Lehigh now sits at 7-9 overall, while Penn sees its record go to 2-9.

In game one, the Mountain Hawks got on the board first in the top of the third when David Moscow blasted a home run to right center, putting Lehigh up 1-0.  The Brown and White would add another in the fourth when junior Matt McBride went yard, giving the visitors a 2-0 edge.  The Mountain Hawks then broke the game open with three runs in the sixth, as John Zaszewski doubled to left and then advanced to third on a wild pitch.  McBride was the next batter and he walked, bringing up senior Andrew Smith, who singled to left, scoring Zaszewski.

McBride and Smith were both able to advance on the play, as a result of a Penn error, with McBride coming all the way around to score, giving Lehigh a 4-2 lead with Smith on second and no outs.  Nick Bet then came up and laced a single to left field, scoring Smith, and the Mountain Hawks went in front 5-2.  The Mountain Hawks would add one more insurance run in the seventh, as Liam O’Connor who earlier had walked, scored on a single by Zaszewski.

In game two, the Quakers came out of the gate strong, scoring three runs in the first on three hits, all singles, to jump to a 3-0 lead.  Lehigh got on the board in its half of the third, when Joe Ercolano doubled and scored after McBride singled and the Penn center fielder committed an error.  Unfortunately, that was the only offense the Mountain Hawks would get all game long.  Penn would add single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to pull away for the victory.  Joe Raniszewski took the loss for the Brown and White, tossing three innings and giving up three runs before giving way to Jed Davitt.

Lehigh and Penn will go at it again on Sunday, with another doubleheader, this one taking place at the baseball field on Goodman Campus.  First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:30 AM.
