Mountain Hawks fall to visiting Monmouth

Lehigh got on the board first when Lissy King scored her third goal of the season just 2:56 into the contest. MacIntyre then put the Mountain Hawks up 2-0 when she scored off of a pass from Kara Chalanick at the 26:43 mark. Monmouth then scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at two, but MacIntyre scored her tenth goal of the season with 20:02 left in the half to put the Brown and White back in front, 3-2.
After six minutes of scoreless ball, the Hawks then scored three straight times to take a 5-3 lead, but it was short lived, as MacIntyre and classmate Tess McGrath scored consecutive goals to tie the game at five, which is how the score would remain heading into halftime.
Evangelisti scored the first two goals of the second half, and Katie Degan and Jeanette Stott added two more quick scores to push Monmouth’s advantage to four, at 9-5. MacIntyre got Lehigh to within four when she scored her fourth goal of the day with 20:38 to go. But the Hawks came back with two more scored, and Lehigh was again down five.
Freshman Meagan Tenety then netted her fourth score of the season with 8:10 to go, making the score just 10-6 in favor of the visitors. After another Monmouth goal, King brought the Brown and White to within four one more time, at 11-7 with 6:10 left. But the Hawks would score twice more and pulled away for their first win of the season.
Head coach Liz Ota expressed her thoughts following the contest. “I thought the first half was a little slow. And then in the second half, I thought we would be able to get into a rhythm, but Monmouth gained the momentum and we were never able to get it ourselves.” She added, “We just did not come out ready to play here this afternoon and really got taken out of the game mentally in the second half.”
Lehigh out shot its opponent 28-23 for the game and scooped up 40 ground balls to Monmouth’s 18. The Mountain Hawks forced 19 Hawk turnovers, but were 0 of 4 on free position shots, while Monmouth was 4 of 5. Lehigh goal keeper Brittany Besler recorded four saves on the afternoon, while Monica Johnson stopped 11 Mountain Hawk shots.
