Lehigh upended by American in league opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Lehigh fell to American by a score of 10-7 in the Patriot League opener on Saturday afternoon, despite a four goal effort from junior Amy Chamberlain. With the loss, the Mountain Hawks fall to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in league action, while the Eagles improve to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in Patriot League play.
Both teams won nine draw controls on the day, with Lehigh out shooting the Eagles 24-21. The Mountain Hawks scooped up 16 ground balls, led by Brittany Besler’s four, while American recorded 27 ground balls. Lehigh turned the ball over 23 times, and forced the Eagles into 22 turnovers of their own.
Amy Chamberlain got Lehigh on the board first at the 26:55 mark on an assist from Lissy King, but the Eagles came back and scored the game’s next four goals to go up 4-1 with 16:52 remaining in the half. Chamberlain then scored her second goal of the day on a free position shot to bring the Brown and White to within two with 15:33 left in the half. Chelsea Kapp answered for American, but the freshman connection of Meagan Tenety to Sara MacIntyre again brought the Mountain Hawks to within two at 5-3.
After Caithlin Gorman scored on a free position shot for the Eagles to make the score 6-3, Chamberlain completed the hat trick with her third score of the game at the 4:39 mark, bringing Lehigh to within two again, at 6-4, which is how the score would remain heading into halftime.
Sophomore Christy Smith opened the second half with a score just 1:45 in, and Lehigh was down just one at 6-5. But
The two teams then went scoreless for the next 11:16, until Gina Ibello beat Besler for a score, and a 9-6 American lead. Kapp would then push the Eagles into double digits as she scored with only 3:54 remaining, and the Brown and White were down 10-6. King would add a late goal for Lehigh, but it was too little, too late.
Besler finished with three saves in goal for the Mountain Hawks, while Tenety dished out a team-high two assists. American goal keeper Kathleen Finnegan stopped ten Lehigh shots on the afternoon.
Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks host Monmouth at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is slated for 3:00.
