FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Lehigh opened its 2006 season in style on Wednesday afternoon downing the Stags of Fairfield 14-13 in an exciting finish.  Freshman Sara MacIntyre scored seven goals in her first-ever collegiate game for the Brown and White, while junior Amy Chamberlain added four scores and as assist.  Vienna Pharaon scored a goal of her own in the victory and dished out a team-best three assists.  The Stags were led by Beth Loffredo’s three goals, with a trio of players adding two scores each.

Lehigh jumped out to an early lead as MacIntyre scored just 6:41 into her career to give the Brown and White a 1-0 lead.  Chamberlain would add to that at the 27:08 mark, but Fairfield sliced the deficit in half when Amy Neville scored at the 26:35 mark.  MacIntyre then scored two more times and Pharaon added a score of her own, propelling Lehigh in front 5-1 with 22:31 left in the opening half.

After Fairfield scored its second goal of the day, Chamberlain and MacIntyre combined for three more goals, pushing the Mountain Hawks advantage up to 8-2 with 9:51 remaining.  Chamberlain and freshman Kyle Roth would both score before the half, and Lehigh went into halftime ahead 10-3

Lissy King and MacIntyre scored the first two goals of the second half and Lehigh found itself comfortably in front 12-3 with 27:34 remaining.  But over the next 25 minutes or so, the Stags would unleash an assault of goals, scoring 11 of them.  However, a MacIntyre goal with 7:06 to go proved to be the difference and the Mountain Hawks squeaked out the road victory.

Lehigh was out shot 28-23 on the afternoon and had 20 ground balls to the Stags’ 24.  The Mountain Hawks forced the home team into 23 turnovers, but did turn the ball over 22 times themselves.  Sophomore Brittany Besler played the entire game in goal for the Brown and White and recorded five saves to pick up the win.

Lehigh returns to action on Friday, March 3 when the Mountain Hawks host Drexel from the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Game time is set for 2:30.
