WASHINGTON, D.C. – Behind a strong defensive effort Lehigh (2-3, 1-0 Patriot League) defeated Georgetown 28-3 on Saturday afternoon in the Patriot League opener at Multi Sport Field as the Mountain Hawks won their seventh straight road contest.  With the win, Lehigh won its eighth Patriot League opener in its last nine tries and downed the Hoyas (1-5, 0-3) for the sixth consecutive season.  Senior Marques Thompson rushed for a career-high 122 yards and two scores on the afternoon, while junior quarterback Sedale Threatt threw for 155 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

"It's great to open the league schedule with a win and to see the defense come up with the big plays like they did today," expressed head coach Andy Coen following the win.  "We still have some areas that we need to clean up, particularly in terms of penalties and consistency within the red zone, but we'll take the win."  Coen added, "Marques was outstanding for us today.  We rode him all afternoon and he delivered."

Georgetown received the opening kickoff, but Lehigh’s defense forced the Hoyas into a three-and-out, giving the Mountain Hawks the ball in their opponent’s territory.  Seven plays later, Threatt hit sophomore Troy Healion for a 14-yard touchdown and Lehigh quickly went up 7-0 with just over nine minutes to go in the quarter.  The catch was Healion’s first of the season and capped a 45-yard drive that took 3:17.  Georgetown then took the ball and put together a strong 15-play, 59-yard drive that ate up 8:23 on the clock and ended with a 38-yard field goal by David Corak which made the score 7-3 heading into the second quarter.

In the second, both offenses struggled, but Lehigh’s defense was up to the challenge as junior defensive back Daynin Blake picked off his first pass of the season, giving the Mountain Hawks the ball deep in Hoya territory, but a fumble by Lehigh gave the ball right back to its opponent.  Once again the Mountain Hawk defense got the ball back, and senior Frank Trovato did the rest, first returning a punt deep in Georgetown territory, and then by catching a two-yard scoring strike from Threatt that sent the visitor’s into the locker room ahead 14-3.

Lehigh had ten first downs in the opening 30 minutes to Georgetown’s five, and out gained its opponent 150-101 for the half.  Threatt finished with 86 yards passing and the two scores, while Trovato hauled in four passes.  Senior Marques Thompson rushed for a team-high 41 yards in the half and Threatt added 19 yards of his own on the ground.  Matt Bassuener rushed for a team-high 50 yards for Georgetown and completed six of ten passes.  Emir Davis added 15 yards rushing for the home team and a trio of Hoyas caught two passes.

After a scoreless third quarter, Lehigh opened the fourth with the ball deep in its own territory and quickly went to work.  Threatt hit Lee Thomas for a long gain, and then the junior signal caller connected with Mike Fitzgerald for another nice chunk of yardage and the Mountain Hawks were in business.  Thompson put the finishing touches on the 93-yard drive with a two-yard score and with 11:10 remaining, Lehigh went in front 21-3.  Junior Ernest Moore then stepped in front of a pass from Bassuener and picked off his fourth pass in the last three games, giving the Mountain Hawks the ball deep in Hoya territory yet again, which Thompson ended with his second rushing score of the afternoon, this time from five yards, giving Lehigh a comfortable 25-point lead with 8:01 left in the contest.

The Lehigh defense stayed strong from there, as the Mountain Hawks rolled to the 25-point win.  The three points allowed by Lehigh are the fewest since LU cruised to a 40-3 win at Fordham in 2005.  For the game, the Hoyas offense accumulated just 204 total yards.

Offensively for the visitors, Trovato was the Mountain Hawks’ leading receiver, catching four passes for 27 yards and a score.  Trovato also returned four punts for 33 yards.

Lehigh hits the road next weekend for its final non-league contest of the season as the Mountain Hawks head to New Haven, Conn. to take on the Bulldogs of Yale at the Yale Bowl.  Kick off is set for 12:37 and the game will be televised live on WFMZ, Channel 69, as well as Fox College Sports Pacific and lehighsports.com with Steve Degler and Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame member Marty Horn ’86.  The contest will be also be broadcast in the Lehigh Valley on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 AM, as well as around the world on Lehighsports.com with Tom Fallon and former Lehigh wide receiver Kody Fedorcha ’00.

EXTRA POINTS … Georgetown’s playing surface is now the popular Field Turf, which marked the second time this season Lehigh played on an artificial surface (Villanova) … Weather in the Washington, D.C. area was chilly with raindrops throughout the game … Lehigh had a nice contingent of fans make the trip to the nation’s capital … The Mountain Hawks are a perfect 6-0 against the Hoyas since Georgetown joined the Patriot League in 2001 … Lehigh’s seven-game road winning streak is the longest since 2000.
