In the second, both offenses struggled, but Lehigh’s defense was up to the challenge as junior defensive back Daynin Blake picked off his first pass of the season, giving the Mountain Hawks the ball deep in Hoya territory, but a fumble by Lehigh gave the ball right back to its opponent. Once again the Mountain Hawk defense got the ball back, and senior Frank Trovato did the rest, first returning a punt deep in Georgetown territory, and then by catching a two-yard scoring strike from Threatt that sent the visitor’s into the locker room ahead 14-3.
Lehigh had ten first downs in the opening 30 minutes to
After a scoreless third quarter, Lehigh opened the fourth with the ball deep in its own territory and quickly went to work. Threatt hit Lee Thomas for a long gain, and then the junior signal caller connected with Mike Fitzgerald for another nice chunk of yardage and the Mountain Hawks were in business. Thompson put the finishing touches on the 93-yard drive with a two-yard score and with 11:10 remaining, Lehigh went in front 21-3. Junior Ernest Moore then stepped in front of a pass from Bassuener and picked off his fourth pass in the last three games, giving the Mountain Hawks the ball deep in Hoya territory yet again, which Thompson ended with his second rushing score of the afternoon, this time from five yards, giving Lehigh a comfortable 25-point lead with 8:01 left in the contest.
The Lehigh defense stayed strong from there, as the Mountain Hawks rolled to the 25-point win. The three points allowed by Lehigh are the fewest since LU cruised to a 40-3 win at Fordham in 2005. For the game, the Hoyas offense accumulated just 204 total yards.
Offensively for the visitors, Trovato was the Mountain Hawks’ leading receiver, catching four passes for 27 yards and a score. Trovato also returned four punts for 33 yards.
