Sacramento, CA – Junior Vaclav Malek opened competition at the 2005 Outdoor Track and Field National Championships on Thursday afternoon on the campus of Sacramento State.  Despite Malek’s best efforts, the Maryland native came up just short of qualifying for Saturday’s finals, as Malek cleared 6’8” ¾, which placed him in 23rd place overall.  Malek needed to be in the top 12-16 jumpers, which was in the range of 6’10” ¾ and above.

Malek who was named the Field Athlete of the Meet at the 2005 Patriot League Outdoor Championships after winning both the high jump and the decathlon, entered a field of 28 jumpers this weekend.  He arrived in Sacramento after finishing in a third place tie at the NCAA East Regionals over Memorial Day Weekend, when he cleared a personal best 6’11”, which also broke his own school record from earlier this season.  Malek is just the second Lehigh athlete ever to qualify for the Outdoor National Championships, joining Lauren Barrett, who qualified in 2003 in the javelin.  Malek is the first male qualifier in school history.
