Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh battled Colgate tough for the first half, and was tied with the first-place Raiders at seven heading into halftime.  But Colgate simply had too much firepower in the second half and pulled away for a 17-10 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  With the loss, Lehigh falls to 4-7 on the season, 1-3 in Patriot League play, while the Raiders improve to 9-4 overall and remain perfect in league play with a record of 4-0.

Barrie Cominsky scored the game’s first goal 2:26 into the contest off of a feed from senior Sarah Starsoneck and Kara Chalanick followed that up with her own score just 42 seconds later to put the Mountain Hawks in front 2-0.  Colgate answered back as Eden Haladay found the back of the net off of a pass from Kelly Winning to cut the lead to 2-1.

Amy Chamberlain then scored her 25th goal of the season for Lehigh on a free position shot and the Mountain Hawks were up by two again, at 3-1.  Megan Janson and Winning then scored back-to-back goals for the Raiders to knot the game at three, but Lehigh would soon take control of the game, scoring four consecutive goals.

Starsoneck netted her 15th score of the season at the 17:59 mark, followed by Cominsky at the 15:02 mark, Chamberlain at the 13:07 mark and Cominsky again with 8:02 left in the half to put the Brown and White in front 7-3.  But just as quickly as Lehigh increased its lead, Colgate took it away, scoring four unanswered goals in the final 7:06 of the half to tie the game at seven heading into intermission.

Haladay and Katie McVeigh scored back-to-back goals to open the second half scoring for Colgate, but Chamberlain found the back of the net for the third time and Lehigh was back to within one at 9-8.  The Raiders then scored six straight goals to go in front 15-8 with 6:36 remaining and Lehigh looked like it was out.  But the Mountain Hawks made one final push as Kristen Sherry scored her first goal of the season and Chamberlain netted her fourth score of the contest in a span of 17 seconds to bring Lehigh to within five, at 15-10.  But Colgate would add two more scores to pull away for the 17-10 victory.

Starsoneck fininshed with one goal and two assists for the Mountain Hawks, while Kara Chalanick also handed out one assist.  Sherry scooped up four ground balls for Lehigh, while Chamberlain added six to go with her four scores.  The Mountain Hawks were out shot 40-19 on the afternoon, and had 15 ground balls to the Raiders 24.  In goal for Lehigh Brittany Bessler got the start and sent back ten shots on the day, before giving way to Kyle Begina, who sent back five Raider shots.

Head Coach Liz Ota was pleased with how the Mountain Hawks came out to start the game, but would have liked to see them continue their great play into the second half.  “I thought we were playing at the top of our game in the first half and we were pleased to go into halftime tied at seven.  In the second half though, we had a few major areas that weren’t as sharp, particularly the draw controls.  They (Colgate) were able to fast break with those draw controls, but more importantly, they controlled possession.”

Ota concluded, “We had a good solid zone in the first half, but Colgate broke down our zone in the second half and forced us to go to man-to-man, which we made a few mistakes in.”

Lehigh returns to action on Sunday morning when the Mountain Hawks welcome Longwood to the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Game time is scheduled for 11:00 am.
