Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh came out slow on Sunday afternoon and fell behind early, but the Mountain Hawks staged a furious comeback, scoring seven goals in the second half to come within three, but in the end, the Mountain Hawks fell 12-9 to Longwood on Sunday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Senior Sarah Starsoneck scored three goals for the Brown and White, while Amy Chamberlain netted two scores in the losing effort.  With the loss, Lehigh falls to 4-8 on the season, while the Lancers improve to 9-2.

Longwood was on fire to start the contest, scoring the game’s first five goals in the opening 18 minutes.  Starsoneck finally got the Mountain Hawks on the board with 11:17 left in the opening half off of a feed from Chamberlain and Vienna Pharaon scored four minutes after that to make the score 5-2 in favor of Longwood.  The Lancers would then tack on three more goals before halftime to head into intermission ahead 8-2.

Cahtleen Strain opened the second half with a goal for Longwood just 2:16 in, but Starsoneck scored her second goal of the contest five minutes later to make the score 9-3 in favor of the Lancers.  Ali Shafer scored on a free position shot at the 16:26 mark and Lehigh was down by seven.  Chamberlain and Kathleen Barry exchanged goals in the next two minutes, and with 13:56 remaining, the score stood at 11-4 in favor of the visitors.  Lissy King, Kristen Sherry and Barrie Cominsky then scored back-to-back-to-back goals for the Brown and White in a span of 2:20 and the Mountain Hawks trailed by just four with 6:51 to go.  The offense would be silent for the next five minutes until Shipp scored again for the Lancers, but Lehigh would not go away.  Starsoneck and Chamberlain both scored goals in the final minute to make the score 12-9, but the Mountain Hawks simply ran out of time.

Chamberlain scooped up three ground balls for the Mountain Hawks on Sunday, while Caitlin Carney, Sherry, Starsoneck, and Cominsky each scooped up three.  Brittany Bessler and Kyle Begina split time in the cage for the Mountain Hawks, with each goal keeper sending back four Lancer shots.  The Brown and White was out shot 30-23 for the game, but scooped up 25 ground balls to the Lancers 17.  Lehigh also won 16 draw controls to Longwood’s seven.

Head Coach Liz Ota knew today’s game would be a difficult task coming off of a game on Saturday.  “We knew that they (Longwood) would be difficult to beat.  They (Longwood) beat William and Mary, who was ranked No. 20 in the nation at the time and they are a solid, athletic team.”  Ota continued, “Coming on the back end of a back-to-back series, following a tough game yesterday with Colgate, you could tell our players weren’t as fresh in the beginning, especially our mid-field players, like Barrie (Cominsky), Kara (Chalanick) and Christy (Smith).  I was pleased with the comeback we put together there at the end and I thought that it had a lot to do with our success in the draw controls and possession.”

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday, April 13 when the Mountain Hawks welcome La Salle to the Ulrich Sports Complex.  That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00.
