Doane and Collina lead Lehigh to series split with Navy

Bethlehem, PA – First baseman Forrest Doane set a Lehigh single season home run record and Kyle Collina pitched a one-hit complete game shutout as the Mountain Hawks blanked Navy by a 3-0 score in game one of a Patriot League doubleheader at Goodman Field on Monday.  Thanks in large part to five Lehigh errors, the Midshipmen rallied to take game two, 6-1.

Following Monday’s twinbill, Lehigh sits at 23-16-1 overall and 11-5 in Patriot League play.  The Mountain Hawks are two games behind first place Army in the league standings with four league games remaining.  After Monday’s split, Navy is 11-27-1 overall and 6-10 in the league.

Collina’s arm and Doane’s bat carried Lehigh in game one.  Collina (5-4) went the distance, allowing only one first inning single and one walk.  The junior right-hander used a lively fastball to fan eight Navy batters.  Collina faced 22 batters in the seven inning complete game – one over the minimum.

With two runners aboard and the game scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, Doane ripped his Patriot League-leading eleventh home run of the season over the wall in right field to give the home team a three-nothing lead, and eventually, the 3-0 win.  Doane’s blast was his eleventh of the season, establishing a new single-season record for home runs by a Lehigh player.

In game two, Navy put together two three-run innings to roll to a 6-1 victory, salvaging a series split.  Navy hurler Jeff Lange (2-2) kept the Mountain Hawks off the board over the first eight innings to earn the win.  Lehigh starter Joe Raniszewski was saddled with his first loss of the season.  Raniszewski falls to 4-1 after allowing six runs (only two earned) in five innings of work.

Lehigh committed an uncharacteristic five errors in game two.

The Mountain Hawks will be back in action on Wednesday, as Lehigh takes on Saint Joseph’s at Limeport Stadium in Limeport, Pa.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:00, and the game will be televised on Service Electric 2 Sports.
