Lehigh keeps it rolling with 20-9 win over Fairfield

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh won its third straight game on Monday afternoon, as the Mountain Hawks defeated Fairfield 20-9 in a dominating effort at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Amy Chamberlain scored four goals and added one assist for Lehigh, while Barrie Comsinky also found the back of the net four times. With the victory, the Brown and White improves to 3-0 on the season, while the Stags fall to 1-3 in 2005.

Libby Gill got the scoring started for Lehigh at the 28:33 mark, and senior Sarah Starsoneck followed that up with a score of her own at the 24:03 mark to put the Mountain Hawks in front 2-0. Fairfield came back and scored the next two goals to knot the game up at two, but Starsoneck took a feed from Chamberlain with 20:47 remaining in the half and Lehigh was back in front 3-2. The Stags evened the score once again just one minute later, but goals by Lissy King and Chamberlain in a span of 1:06 put the Brown and White up 5-3 with 18:13 remaining.

Fairfield scored the next two goals and tied the game at five with 14:27 remaining in the half, but Chamberlain and Cominsky scored the last four goals of the half in the final 10:51 and the Mountain Hawks took a 9-5 lead into halftime.

Freshman Christy Smith opened the second half with a goal just 25 seconds in, and Starsoneck added another score at the 27:42 mark to put Lehigh well in front at 11-5. The Mountain Hawks then poured it on, with three more goals in a span of four minutes, and with 23:37 to go, the home team was in front 14-5.

Sarah Masterson stopped the bleeding temporarily with a score at the 20:18 mark, but Lehigh came back on the strength of a goal by Smith to go up 15-6. The Stags scored two straight to pull within seven at 15-8, but the Mountain Hawks scored five goals in just 11 minutes, one each by King, Chamberlain, Smith, Starsoneck and Kara Chalnick, and the Brown and White was fully in control, up by a count of 20-8. Julia Poll scored on a free position shot with 16 seconds remaining, but it was too little, too late as Lehigh secured its three straight victory.

Chalanick scored two goals for Lehigh, while King also scored twice. Vienna Paraon had a great day for the Brown and White, handing out five assists on the afternoon. Lehigh out shot the Stags 40-24 on the afternoon and scooped up 26 groundballs to Fairfield’s 17. In goal for the Mountain Hawks, Kyle Begina started the game and played 33 minutes, sending back four shots, while freshman Brittany Besler had three saves in 26 minutes of action.

Beth Loffredo, Amy Neville and Julia Poll each scored two goals for the Stags, while in goal Kristin Genovese sent back 10 Mountain Hawk shots in 60 minutes of work.

Head Coach Liz Ota, who has yet to lose in her career at Lehigh, was happy with the effort and result on Monday afternoon. “I’m happy with the way we came out and played in the second half. We really took control of the draw controls and created our stint fast break opportunities, which led to a lot of scoring opportunities for us.” Ota continued, “We played hard out there all afternoon and it was just a great team effort. Brittany (Besler) did a nice job for us in goal, giving Kyle a chance to re-focus. Brittany really gave our defense a boost, especially when she came in there in the first half.”

Lehigh returns to action on Thursday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks continue their five-game home stand, welcoming Mount St. Mary’s to the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is slated for 4:00.
