Mountain Hawks hang tough, but fall for first time in 2005

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh hung tough all afternoon long, exchanging goals with Mount St. Mary’s for the majority of the contest, but in the end the Mountain Hawks came up just short, falling 8-5 at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Freshman Christy Smith led Lehigh with two goals on the afternoon, as the Brown and White suffered its first loss of the season and now sits at 3-1. The Mount wins its first game in 2005 and is currently 1-2.

Mount St. Mary’s opened the scoring early, just 50 seconds into the contest in fact, as Lauren Reymann took a feed from Kirby Day and put the Mountaineers in front 1-0. Senior captain Barrie Cominsky answered back for Lehigh however, as she scored at the 26:01 mark off of a feed from Libby Gill to knot the score up at one.

Nicole Di’Angelo put the Mount back up by one with only six minutes remaining in the first half, and that is how the teams would retire for halftime, with Lehigh trailing 2-1.

Smith opened the second half with a goal at the 28:52 mark to tie the game, and following a Mount St. Mary’s goal, Smith added her second score off of a free position shot at the 20:44 mark to make the score 3-3. Casey Paris and Day then put the Mountaineers back in front 5-3. Senior Sarah Starsoneck pulled the Mountain Hawks to within one though, as she scored on a free position shot with just 13 minutes left. Di’Angelo netted her second score of the game just 1:11 later and the Mount was up two, at 6-4.

Vienna Pharoan did her best to bring the home team back, as she took a pass from Amy Chamberlain and found the back of the net with 7:30 remaining, but Lauren Reymann and Ellie Keener would add scores for the Mount, sending the Mountain Hawks to their first loss under Liz Ota.

Lehigh was out shot on Thursday 29-26, and had 26 groundballs to the Mount’s 28. The Mountain Hawks were 2-10 on free position shots, and won four draw controls. Cominsky scooped up six groundballs for Lehigh, while Caitlin Carney added five and Starsoneck led the home team with five shots on the day. In goal for the Brown and White, Kyle Begina was spectacular, sending back 13 shots on the afternoon. Mount St. Mary’s goalie Naomi Campano Radio stopped 14 Lehigh shots on the day, while Kelsey Withrow scooped up five groundballs.

Ota was upbeat following the loss, as she liked the defense of her Mountain Hawks. “I thought Kyle had an absolutely amazing game for us in goal this afternoon.” Ota continued, “In the Fairfield game, we gave up nine goals and we weren’t too happy about that, so our focus here today was to hold the score down and we accomplished that. We stayed in a zone for a portion of the game and overall we just played solid team defense.”

Ota concluded, “This was a tough game that we could have won, but we’ll be hungry when we come out on Saturday versus American. We have a few things to work on, but we’ll fix those up and be ready on Saturday.”

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday morning as the Mountain Hawks open up their Patriot League schedule versus American at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 11:00 am and all of the action can be heard live on lehighsports.com with Jeff Tourial providing the commentary.
