Lehigh can't complete comeback against Holy Cross

3/26/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Lacrosse

Worcester, MA – Senior Sarah Starsoneck handed out four assists and Lissy King and Libby Gill both scored twice, but it wasn’t enough as Lehigh could not overcome an early 4-0 deficit and fell to Holy Cross 9-6 on Saturday afternoon, the Mountain Hawks fifth straight defeat.  The Brown and White now sits at 3-5 on the season and 0-2 in league play, while the Crusaders improve to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in Patriot League action.

Holy Cross got the scoring going just 16 seconds into the contest as Nikki Bolduc scored off an assist from Kristine Corkum and Lehigh found itself in an early hole.  Amy Archambault then made the deficit 2-0 as she took a pass from Eileen Hartigan 6:34 into the opening half.  Hartigan and Archambault would add one goal apiece in the next seven minutes and with 17:28 remaining in the half, the Mountain Hawks trailed 4-0

Barrie Cominsky got Lehigh on the board 17:40 into the half off of Starsoneck’s first assist of the day, and Amy Chamberlain then sliced the Crusader lead in half off of Starsoneck’s second helper with 7:29 to go in the half.  But Carolyn Smirti and Patricia Sutton would each add scores before the half, sending the Mountain Hawks to the locker room down 6-2.

Gill opened the second half scoring just 4:36 in to cut the Holy Cross lead down to three at 6-3, but Archambault scored yet again for the Crusaders and Lehigh was again down four.  Sutton added her second score of the day with 15:55 left in the game and the score was then 8-3, but Lehigh would not go away quietly.  King scored her first goal of the contest with 13:32 to go and Lehigh had life, down 8-4, but Kaitlin Nangle stole the momentum back for Holy Cross as she took a feed from Hartigan, and with exactly 12 minutes left, the Mountain Hawks were down 9-4.  Gill and King added late scores, but Lehigh could not complete the comeback and fell 9-6.

Vienna Pharaon handed out an assist for Lehigh on the day, while King led the Mountain Hawks with six shots.  Kristen Sherry and Eileen Miller both scooped up three groundballs on the afternoon, while in goal Brittany Bessler got the start and sent back three Crusader shots, before giving way to Kyle Begina, who registered four saves on the afternoon.  Lehigh out shot Holy Cross 22-21 for the game, while both teams scooped up 14 ground balls in the contest.  The Mountain Hawks did an excellent job of handling the ball, as they turned it over five times, compared to the Crusaders 12.

Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks travel to Connecticut to take on Sacred Heart.  Game time is set for 4:00.
