Fairfield, CT – Lehigh jumped out to an early lead, only to see it turn into a large halftime deficit, but the Mountain Hawks fought back and had a chance to win, before falling 14-13 to Sacred Heart on Tuesday afternoon.  Senior Barrie Cominsky scored three goals for the Brown and White, while three other players found the back of the net twice, but it wasn’t enough, as Lehigh fell to 3-6 on the season.  With the win, the Pioneers improve to 5-3

Freshman Christy Smith got the scoring started as she found the back of the net for the 16th time this season just 19 seconds into the contest.  Senior Barrie Comsinky then took a pass from sophomore Amy Chamberlain and scored just 19 seconds later and the Mountain Hawks were quickly in front 2-0.  The Pioneers would come back however, as Katie Salamone scored with 28:05 to go in the half and the Lehigh lead was sliced in half.

Chamberlain upped the Mountain Hawks lead to 3-1 at the 25:43 mark when she scored her 20th goal of the season with 25:43 remaining in the opening half.  Salamone then trimmed the Lehigh lead to one again when she found the back of the net for the second time with 22 minutes to go in the half.

Cominsky struck next for the Brown and White to up its lead to 4-2 with 19:27 to go, but Sacred Heart answered right back as Maureen Hohn netted her seventh score of the season just 23 seconds later.  Starsoneck upped the Mountain Hawks lead to 5-3 with 12:32 to go with her 12th goal of the season, but Brianna Bubeck and JoAnn Montesarchio scored back-to-back goals for the Pioneers and the game was knotted at five.

Montesarchio, Salamone, Natalie Smith and Heather Gureckis then combined to score six goals over the next 5:31 and at halftime, the score stood: Sacred Heart 11, Lehigh 5.

In the second half, the teams continued to go back and forth as Libby Gill scored two goals in the first 4:39 and Lehigh was within four scores, at 11-7.  Salamone continued her brilliant play for the Pioneers, scoring with 23:02 left in the contest, and Heather Gureckis followed that up with a score of her own to push the lead back up to six at 13-7 with 20:08 left in the game.

Cominsky and Kara Chalanick then cut the lead to four with back-to-back scores in a span of 1:30, and with 14:21 left, Lehigh trailed 13-9.  Vienna Pharoan then took Lehigh one step closer, as she scored off of a pass from Smith with 9:52 to go, but Gureckis came right back for the home team and again made the margin four goals at 14-10.

Pharoan scored her second goal of the contest, off of a feed from Chamberlain, and with just 5:22 remaining, Lehigh had life, down by a count of 14-11.  Chamberlain then took a feed from Starsoneck and found the back of the net with 2:27 remaining and the Mountain Hawks were within two scores of completing the incredible comeback.  Chalanick made it a one goal affair with only 38 seconds left in the game, and Lehigh had hopes of forcing overtime with one last score.

But Sacred Heart took possession of the ball on the ensuing draw control and ran out the clock to preserve the victory.  Lehigh out shot the Pioneers 25-21 for the game, and scooped up 29 ground balls to Sacred Heart’s 23.  The Mountain Hawks won 14 draw controls for the games, while the Pioneers won 15.  Brittany Bessler played the entire game in goal for the Mountain Hawks and sent back four shots on the afternoon.  Chamberlain finished the day with two goals and two assists, while Cominsky added one assist to her three scores.  Other Mountain Hawks that scored twice were Gill, Chalanick and Pharaon.

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Mountain Hawks step back into conference play, heading to Philadelphia to take on Villanova.  Game time is set for 1:00.
