Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh improved to 2-0 on the season with a solid 11-6 victory over visiting Manhattan on a cold, blustery afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Senior captain Barrie Cominsky led the way with three goals and two assists on the afternoon, while sophomore Amy Chamberlain also found the back of the net three times in the victory for the Mountain Hawks.  With the win, Lehigh now sits at 2-0 on the young season, while the Jaspers fall to 0-1.

Manhattan scored the game’s first goal at the 27:40 mark when Jenny Carman found the back of the net unassisted.  Senior Sarah Starsoneck came back for Lehigh with a goal of her own to knot the contest at one at the 24:16 however, and Cominsky then went to work.  The Florida native scored at the 21:37 mark to put the Brown and White in front and Starsoneck pushed the advantage up to 3-1 when she scored at the 20:02 mark.

The Jaspers would score the game’s next goal at the 13:02 mark when Katelyn Williams deposited a goal off of a feed from Catherine Dunbar to make the score 3-2 in favor of Lehigh.  Chamberlain then took a feed from Comsinky at the 7:42 mark to end the first half scoring, and send the frigid Mountain Hawks to the locker room in front 4-2.

Lissy King scored the second half’s first goal off of a free position shot at 24:45 of the half and less than three minutes later, freshman Christy Smith scored goal number five on the season off of a free position shot to put Lehigh in front 6-2.  Jenny Carman and Erin Warren scored back to back goals for the Jaspers to pull them within two, but after a Mountain Hawk timeout, the Brown and White got right back in business on two scores by Cominksy in a span of four minutes, putting Lehigh in front 8-4 at the 16:28 mark.  Chamberlain then found the back of the net on a free position shot at the 14:47 mark, and Lehigh was rolling.

King would add another goal for the Mountain Hawks at the 11:43 mark and Chamberlain put her sixth goal of the season in the back of the net at the 6:42 mark to give Lehigh its 11 goals on the afternoon.  In addition to Cominsky and Chamberlain having stellar games for Lehigh, Starsoneck also played well, scoring two goals and scooping up two groundballs.  Smith also picked up two groundballs as the freshman continues to play well for the Mountain Hawks.  Kara Chalanick led Lehigh with four groundballs, while in goal, Kyle Begina sent back four Jasper shots on the day.

Head Coach Liz Ota thought the cold was a major factor in the game, but was pleased with the way her Mountain Hawks fought through that and won the game.  “The cold definitely affected everyone out there today.  I think once we were able to over come that, that we played some great lacrosse.  I liked the way we displayed good patience on the attack, and in the second half we controlled possession.  Manhattan is a scrappy team and they fought hard all game long, but we were able to fight through the cold and pick up the win”  Ota then commented on Cominsky’s stellar afternoon, “Barrie was spectacular today.  She did a nice job with her leadership out there and really took control of the game for us.”

Lehigh returns to action on Monday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks play host to Fairfield at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Game time is set for 3:00.
