Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh received contributions from many players, and had a chance to win against St. Joe’s on Saturday, but in the end, the Mountain Hawks fell to the Philadelphia school by a score of 13-12 in overtime.  Freshman Christy Smith led the Brown and White with three goals and an assist, while Amy Chamberlain also found the back of the net three times.  With the loss, Lehigh falls to 3-4 on the season, while St. Joe’s improves to 2-1.

Lissy King opened the game with a score just 38 seconds in, off of a feed from senior Sarah Starsoneck and Chamberlain followed that up five minutes later with her first score off of an assist from Barrie Cominsky and the Mountain Hawks were in front 2-0.  St. Joe’s came back though, as Shannon Scott and Jenny Egan tallied goals in a span of three minutes to knot the score at two.

Starsoneck and Cominsky then put the home team back up by two scores with 9:58 to go in the first half as the seniors scored twice in a span of 49 seconds.  Kerry O’Connell and Lindsey McCool tied the game again with two goals for St. Joe’s, but Lehigh closed the first half with goals by Vienna Pharaon and a free position shot by Smith to go to the locker room up 6-4.

Smith began the second half with another free position shot and Lehigh was in business, up 7-4.  Egan, Kristina Jaggers and O’Connell scored one goal each though, and with 15:10 to go, the game was tied again, this time at seven.

Smith and Chamberlain did their best to keep Lehigh in front, as they scored one goal apiece in just 11 seconds, but as they did all day, the Hawks kept coming back.  McCool scored twice and O’Connell found the back of the net once, and with 5:11 remaining, St. Joe’s was in front 10-9.  Pharaon scored off of a free position shot with 1:34 remaining, and when Chamberlain netted her third score of the day off of a feed from Gill at the 1:02 mark, it appeared as though the Mountain Hawks would win this one.  But O’Connell took a pass from Lindsay Brown with just 23 seconds to go, and the game was even at 11, sending it into overtime.

In the extra session, McCool opened the scoring just 16 seconds in to put St. Joe’s up by one.  But Cominsky took a feed from Smith one minute into the extra period and the game was tied at 12.  O’Connell then spoiled the Mountain Hawks day as she scored 1:34 into the overtime and St. Joe’s won the game.

Lehigh out shot the Hawks 26-21 on the day, and had 21 groundballs to St. Joe’s six.  In goal for the Mountain Hawks, Kyle Begina sent back three shots and was then relieved by Brittany Besler who stopped five shots on the afternoon.

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks welcome Siena to the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Game time is set for 4:00 and all of the action can be heard live on lehighsports.com.
