Letters and Trenge advance to national semifinals

3/18/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

St. Louis, MO – Friday afternoon’s action is now in the books at the 2005 NCAA wrestling championships at Savvis Center and both top-seeded Mountain Hawks advanced to Friday night’s semifinal round. Both Troy Letters and Jon Trenge won their quarterfinal bouts by decision to become three-time All-Americans; while another Mountain Hawk, Cory Cooperman is one win away from All-American status.

Letters became Lehigh’s first semifinalist with a 4-0 decision of No. 8 seed Travis Paulson of Iowa State. The defending national champion scored a first period takedown, an escape and a riding time point to notch his 36th consecutive victory and become an All-American for the third consecutive year. Letters will face Iowa freshman Mark Perry, the No. 4 seed.

A little while later Trenge advanced to the semis with a convincing 9-2 win over No. 8 seed Matt Delguyd of Northwestern. Trenge scored three takedowns, was awarded a point for an illegal hold and also picked up an escape and riding time to earn the win. Trenge will face fifth-seeded Sean Stender of Northern Iowa in the semifinals.

“He (Delguyd) is a good guy,” Trenge said after the bout. “It was nice to be able to go out and wrestle someone and not have to worry about defending myself.”

The fourth seeded Cooperman was the only Mountain Hawk to lose in the quarterfinals, as he fell to fifth-seeded Andy Simmons of Michigan State. Cooperman trailed late in the third and wound up in a compromising position as Simmons was able to score a pin in the final minute and send Coop to the wrestlebacks where he will face Don Fisch of Rider Friday night with the winner becoming an All-American.

In consolation action, Matt Ciasulli saw his tournament come to an end. Up 4-2 late in the third, the sophomore from Easton was put on his back in the final five seconds and three near fall points gave the win to Derek Moore of UC Davis. Ciasulli finishes with a 1-2 record in the tournament.

After a tough loss in last night’s second round Travis Frick, sporting a facemask to protect a broken nose, defeated Penn’s Dustin Wiles 8-4. He then went on to face American’s Dan Waters in a rematch of the EIWA third place match, won by Frick. Waters, a former Navy S.E.A.L. got revenge the second time around with a 7-3 decision. Frick’s tournament is over with a 2-2 record.

“I’m proud of the way Letters and Trenge wrestled today,” said head coach Greg Strobel. “They are the two guys who have stayed focused and they are still within reach of their ultimate goal.”

Oklahoma State continues to lead the team standings with 78.5 points while Lehigh dropped to tenth with 32 points.

Action continues Friday evening, as Session IV gets underway with the semifinals of the championship bracket kicking off at 6:00 pm CST from Savvis Center.  The semifinals will be televised live on ESPNU, available on DirecTV channel 609.  Following Session IV, an audio recap of the day’s events will air live on lehighsports.com.  The show, featuring a live interview with Lehigh head coach Greg Strobel, will get underway at approximately 10:30 pm EST Friday night.

SCENES FROM ST. LOUIS … Unlike Thursday when Lehigh was clad in white, the Mountain Hawks sported their brown singlets on Friday morning … Next year’s Division I wrestling championships will take place at Ford Center in Oklahoma City.  The 2007 finals are slated to be held at The Palace of Auburn Hills, outside of Detroit.  Host sites for the 2008-2011 championships will be announced soon.  Among the five finalists to host are Saint Louis and Wachovia Center in Philadelphia (bid submitted in part by Rider University) … Savvis Center erupted when Oklahoma’s second ranked Teyon Ware picked up a close 4-3 decision over No. 7 Daniel Frishkorn of rival Oklahoma State … For the second straight session, the morning began as the National Anthem was played on the Savvis Center organ.  The arena’s primary tenant is the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League.
