Bethlehem, PA – Senior Sarah Starsoneck scored three goals and added three assists as Lehigh opened its season with a convincing 16-5 victory over visiting Binghamton at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.  Starsoneck was one of five Mountain Hawks to score three or more goals in the win, as Lehigh improves to 1-0 under first year head coach Liz Ota.  The Bearcats are 0-1 following the defeat.

“I thought this was a good start for us, and we showed a lot of heart and emotion,” Ota said following the win.  “We did a lot of great things that we can build on.”

Lehigh started strong, bulding a 2-0 lead just 5:33 into the game.  Sophomore Libby Gill scored off a pass from Starsoneck to get things started, and then Starsoneck found the back of the net less than two minutes later.  Binghamton got on the board shortly thereafter, but the Mountain Hawks took a 6-3 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Lehigh freshman Christy Smith scored three times as the Mountain Hawks pulled away and cruised to the win.  Smith finished the afternoon with a game-high four goals.

“Christy helped us with her strong play,” Ota explained.  “Her speed is an enormous asset, and she is truly a team player.”

In addition to four goals from Smith, Starsoneck, Gill, Lissy King, and Amy Chamberlain all registered three goals apiece in the win.

Heather Grose and Laura Gabbamonte each scored twice for the Bearcats.

On the afternoon, Lehigh out-shot Binghamton 40-19.  Junior goalie Kyle Begina recorded six saves in 56:56 of action.  Freshman Brittany Besler played the final 3:04, notching two saves.  Binghamton goalkeeper Christa Quon made 16 stops on the afternoon.

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday, when the Mountain Hawks host Manhattan.  Action gets underway at 4:00 at Ulrich.
