Lehigh falls in season finale

4/24/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Lacrosse

– Lehigh dropped its season finale to Bucknell on Saturday afternoon by a score of 14-9, in a game that was close throughout.  Ella Studdiford ended her Lehigh career with a bang, recording a hat trick and one assist on the afternoon in the losing cause.  With the loss, Lehigh finishes its 2004 season at 5-10, 1-5 in Patriot League play, while Bucknell improves to 8-6, 4-2 in league action and will now move on to the Patriot League Tournament next weekend.

Senior Meredith Carso started Lehigh off on the right foot, as she found the back of the net at the 28:14 mark of the first half to put the Mountain Hawks in front, 1-0.  Studdiford then scored her first goal of the contest at the 27:33 mark and Lehigh was in front early, by a score of 2-0.  Bucknell would slice the lead in half on a goal by Meredith Wright, but Emily Studdiford answered right back for Lehigh to put the Brown and White in front 3-1 at the 23:08 mark.

Bucknell then went on a scoring frenzy and unleashed five unanswered goals, the last of which was netted by Abby Brewster with 15 minutes remaining in the half, and the Bison surged in front 6-3.  Ella Studdiford added her second tally of the half with just over five minutes left before halftime, but the Bison answered once again and at halftime, Bucknell was in front 7-4.

Both teams unleashed 15 shots in the opening 30 minutes, while Lehigh scooped up nine groundballs, compared to Bucknell’s eight.  The Mountain Hawks caused ten Bucknell turnovers in the opening stanza, but also turned the ball over 11 times themselves.

Laura Nuss opened the second half scoring for Bucknell just 21 seconds in, and the Bison quickly claimed a four goal advantage at 8-4.  But Kristen Sherry answered for Lehigh with her first goal of the season at the 26:05 mark, which pulled the Mountain Hawks to within three at 8-5.  Following Andrea Paraud’s second score of the game, Barrie Cominsky and Ella Studdiford scored back to back goals, which closed the gap to 9-7 at the 15:54 mark, and suddenly Lehigh had new life.

But Bucknell kept its distance, finding the back of the net two more times, and with just over seven minutes remaining in the contest, Lehigh trailed 11-7.  Amy Chamberlain then scored goal number 13 on the season with 7:24 left in the game, but the Bison put the Mountain Hawks away for good with three more scores to surge in front 14-8.  Sarah Starsoneck would add one late goal for Lehigh to make the final score 14-9 in favor of the Bison.

No one other than Ella Studdiford scored more than one goal for the Mountain Hawks, while Chamberlain, Rebecca Morley and Ella Studdiford each tallied one assist.  Each team shot the ball 31 times, while Lehigh recorded 15 groundballs, to the Bison’s 13.  In goal for Lehigh, Kyle Begina got the start and played the first 53 minutes, recording eight saves.  Begina was then relieved by Vanessa Abbott, who played the final seven minutes and stopped two Bison shots.
