Lehigh sends seniors out on a high note

Bethlehem, PA – On the day of the senior class of 2004’s final home game, the Mountain Hawks played one of their most complete games of the season to send the eight member class out on a winning note with an 11-9 victory over Monmouth on Wednesday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Leading the way was junior Sarah Starsoneck with three goals and three assists for the game, good for a game-high six points. In goal for Lehigh, Kyle Begina had a career day, sending back 13 Monmouth shots in her 60 minutes of action. With the victory, Lehigh improves to 5-7 on the season, while Monmouth falls to 6-6 on the year.

Sarah Starsoneck got the scoring started for Lehigh as she hit the back of the net at the 25:46 mark of the first half, and Lehigh was ahead 1-0. Monmouth answered right back as Kate Hanna snuck a ball past Begina to tie the game at one, and that was followed up by another score by Laura Levins to put the Hawks in front 2-1. The Mountain Hawks then reeled off four consecutive goals, as Emily Studdiford, Kellan Van Hoesen, and Starsoneck scored in the last nine minutes of the half to send Lehigh into the locker room ahead 4-2.

The second half opened with another Mountain Hawk goal, this one coming from Barrie Comsinky at the 23:35 mark to put Lehigh in front 5-2. Monmouth answered back quickly however with two scores in a matter of 28 seconds and the Lehigh lead had shrunk to one at 5-4. Ella Studdiford and Cominsky then scored back to back goals for the Brown and White to make the cushion three goals at 7-4 with 23:35 left in the game.

But Lehigh then had a defensive lapse, allowing four consecutive Hawk goals, which changed the score from 7-4 Lehigh, to 8-7 Monmouth. It appeared as though Lehigh had lost momentum and its grasp of the game, but on this senior day, the Mountain Hawks would not be denied. Amy Chamberlain took a pass from Van Hoesen and found the back of the net at the 15:48 mark to tie the game, and following a Monmouth goal, Van Hoesen scored one of her own to knot the affair up at nine. Starsoneck and Ella Studdiford would add two late goals, which wound up to be the difference in the end.

Van Hoesen finished with four goals for Lehigh, compiling two goals and two assists, while Emily Studdiford racked up two assists and one score. Cominsky scored two times for Lehigh and scooped up a team high five groundballs on the evening. As mentioned before Begina was stellar in goal all evening for Lehigh, sending back 13 Monmouth shots. Leihigh was outshot 30-23 by the Hawks but it did not matter on this night. Monmouth was led in scoring by Katie Degan with two goals and one assist, while Stacy Sydlo added two scored of her own.

Head Coach Jim Shreve was happy to send his seniors out on a winning note. “We lost a little momentum there for a bit, but we fought back and were able to control the game in the end.” Shreve continues, “I told the team before the game that this was for the seniors and I told them that again after the game. Our offense played well and Kyle was unbelievable in goal today.”

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Hamilton, New York to take on first place Colgate in a pivotal showdown. That game is scheduled to begin at 1:00.
