Lehigh defeated by American in Patriot League opener

Washington, D.C. – Despite hat tricks from both Kellan Van Hoesen and Barrie Cominsky, Lehigh could not overcome a ten-goal explosion to begin the second half from American, as the Mountain Hawks fell 15-10 in their Patriot League opener on Saturday afternoon. Lehigh held a 9-4 advantage at halftime, but was outscored 11-1 in the second half, which proved to be the difference. With the loss, Lehigh falls to 2-3 overall, and 0-1 in the Patriot League, while the Eagles improve to 2-0 in league action and 3-3 overall.
American jumped on the board first as Moriah Linnell scored at the 27:36 mark of the opening half on a free position shot to put the Eagles in front 1-0. However, Lehigh came right back as senior Meredith Carso found the back of the net off of a feed from Cominsky at the 22:48 mark and the contest was tied at one. American answered right back to take the lead once again, but the Mountain Hawks would rip off four consecutive goals, as Van Hoesen, Amy Chamberlain, Cominsky and Emily Studdiford all found the back of the net to put Lehigh in the lead at 5-2.
The Mountain Hawks would then score four more times to surge in front 9-4 at the half, as Carso, Van Hoesen and Cominsky all scored for Lehigh, and it appeared as though the Mountain Hawks were in control. But the second half would prove to be a different story. American came out and scored ten unanswered goals to surge ahead 14-9 at the 8:13 mark and Lehigh simply could not come back.
Cominsky would add her third goal of the game down the stretch, but it was too little, too late for Lehigh. American was led in scoring by Linnell and Nicole McCarthy with four scores apiece, and Rebecca Copeland with three goals of her own. Carso finished with two goals for Lehigh, and Chamberlain, and Studdiford added one each.
Studdiford dished out two assists to lead Lehigh, and Carso, Chamberlain, Cominsky, and King all added one helper each. In goal for the Mountain Hawks Kyle Begina saw 35 shots on the afternoon and turned back nine of them. Begina also scooped up a team-high three groundballs on the afternoon.
Lehigh returns to action on Thursday when the Mountain Hawks play host to archrival Lafayette from the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is slated for 7:00 and all of the action will be broadcast live on the Lehigh website at lehighsports.com.
