Fresh off the largest turnaround (+7) in Division I lacrosse, the Lehigh Mountain Hawks can’t wait to hit the turf at the Ulrich Sports Complex for the 2004 season. Last year’s group won ten games and qualified for the Patriot League tournament. This year, first year coach Jim Shreve’s squad loses only one senior to graduation and will field a lineup full of experienced veterans from top to bottom. With 11 starters and 12 letterwinners returning the Mountain Hawks will look to build on last season’s successful, ten-win season and return to the Patriot League tournament. Up front, all four of the team’s starting attackers will be back from last year’s explosive front line that produced 70 goals. Leading the offensive onslaught will be junior Kellan Van Hoesen who netted 25 goals last year for the Mountain Hawks. Senior Emily Studdiford, who led the team a year ago by tallying 33 points with 23 goals, will join Van Hoesen in attacking the opponents defensive zone and will once again look to pack a powerful one-two scoring punch. Also up front for Lehigh will be juniors Ella Studdiford and Jen Fleming who scored 12 and ten goals respectively. Freshman Amy Chamberlain is expected to impact an already talented group of attack. Senior Suzanne Aronowitz will provide depth up front along with junior Sarah Corrigan returning from a knee injury and sophomores Clare Burchi, Molly Baker, Jen Vigdor and junior Kirby Wycoff. At midfield, the Mountain Hawks will return three of their five starters from last season that scored 42 goals. Graduated is All-Patriot League selection, Rosie Sherry, but returning are senior captain Meredith Carso, and juniors Barrie Cominsky and Kristen Sherry. Expected to replace Sherry in the starting lineup is senior captain Rebecca Morley who saw significant action last year in 13 games. Cominsky will be looked upon to repeat her exceptional play of a year ago where she averaged 4.14 ground balls per game and recorded 23 points, on her way to being named second team All-Patriot League. Carso scored 23 goals last season, second best on the squad and recorded a total of 30 points. The more defensive-minded midfielder Kris Sherry will anchor the five-girl line, along with sophomores Caitlen Carney and freshmen new comers Kara Jordan and Elaine King. Defensively, seniors Sue Schoelle and Ashley Manion both return to anchor the defensive line, as they played side-by-side last season, starting all 14 games together. Junior Sarah Starsoneck who snagged 6 goals and 10 points last year along with Annie Succop and sophomore Eileen Miller will strengthen and help anchor the defensive unit. In the goal cage, 14-game starter sophomore Kyle Begina strives to better her .528 save percentage of a year ago which was second best in the Patriot League. Begina played every minute in net for the Mountain Hawks as a freshman last season, making 140 saves. Absent last season, senior Vanessa Abbott returns to solidify and compete for the goalie spot. Along with a high level of talent, experience and team chemistry come high expectations. But, with a large number of veterans, a deep bench, a talented amount of returning starters and a large incoming recruiting class, the Mountain Hawks hope to remain in the upper echelon of the Patriot League in 2004 and compete for a league championship.
