Shannon McHugh enters her fifth season on the Lehigh sidelines in 2016. After joining head coach Jill Redfern’s staff prior to the 2013 season, McHugh was Lehigh’s first assistant in 2014 then promoted to associate head coach and recruiting coordinator heading into the 2015 campaign. McHugh came to Lehigh directly from her playing days at Cornell where she enjoyed tremendous success for the Big Red.

McHugh works extensively with Lehigh’s midfielders and plays an integral role in the overall coaching and recruiting efforts. A midfielder herself at Cornell, McHugh posted 71 career goals, earning honorable mention All-Ivy League as a junior and second team honors as a senior.

McHugh has coached 2014 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and 2016 Patriot League Attacker of the Year Allison LaBeau, who participated in U.S. National Team tryouts following both her freshman and junior seasons. After 38 points as a freshman, LaBeau went on to post 48 points as a sophomore in 2015, which was eighth in the Patriot League. She finished with 34 goals, 14 assists, 17 groundballs, 15 draw controls and 11 caused turnovers. As a junior, LaBeau finished eighth nationally in points per game, finishing with 80 points (46 goals, 34 assists).

McHugh helped guide the Mountain Hawks to a 4-4 league record in 2014 and their first Patriot League Tournament appearance since 2011. The team also defeated Boston University 12-11 in double overtime to hand the Terriers their first-ever Patriot League loss. Five Mountain Hawks earned All-Patriot League recognition.

The 2015 season saw Lehigh advance to its second straight Patriot League Tournament, highlighted by a win at eventual NEC Champion and NCAA Tournament team Bryant and a road victory at Rutgers out of the Big Ten in front of a nationally-televised audience. The Mountain Hawks won their final two regular season games to reach the postseason, while also hanging tough in their regular-season meeting against eventual league champion and National Quarterfinalist Loyola, trailing by just three goals with 6:51 still remaining.

Lehigh finished the 2016 season with a strong 13-5 record, including a 6-3 record in the Patriot League. The six league victories marked a school record while the Mountain Hawks hosted a league tournament game, and won a postseason contest, for the first time since 2010. Lehigh beat Colgate in the Patriot League quarterfinals to reach the semifinals for the first time since 2011. LaBeau was named the league’s Attacker of the Year while Julianne D’Orazio and Kendall Garden were also named first team All-League, and Lauren Beausoleil garnered second team laurels. The Mountain Hawks earned a big road victory at Boston University while taking Loyola into overtime during the regular season, then playing a competitive back-and-forth game against the Greyhounds in the Patriot League Semifinals.

McHugh finished her collegiate career in 2012 by posting 20 goals and two assists while leading the Big Red with 43 draw controls. That moved her to seventh in school history for career draw controls. McHugh posted 71 career goals, earning honorable mention All-Ivy league as a junior and second team laurels as a senior. McHugh also took part in the prestigious 2012 IWLCA North-South Senior All-Star Game, like former Lehigh standout and current graduate assistant Leigh Ann Torcivia. McHugh posted an impressive 11-game goal streak as a senior.

McHugh owns extensive work and coaching experience. She was lacrosse office assistant at Cornell last spring where she learned recruiting software (ScoutWare), helped plan practice, order equipment and plan team travel. McHugh also contacted alumni and organized community service events.

McHugh has coaching experience at various Cornell camps while working at Penn Camp, SU Nike Cup Camp and Duke Camp in the summer of 2012. She also made her mark with the Manlius Youth Summer League from 2005 through 2008.

While at Cornell, McHugh was involved in multiple fundraising projects including a dodgeball tournament benefitting MS, Breast Cancer Awareness game benefiting Finger Lakes Cancer Resource Center and Freed My Starving Children.

Prior to her collegiate experience, McHugh was a two-time first team All-League selection at Fayetteville-Manlius High School, leading the team in groundballs, draw controls and goals as a senior. She also garnered first team All-Central New York and U.S. Lacrosse Scholarship All-America honors her final season.
