HISTORY

Originally approved for purchase by the University in 1958, the "Saucon Fields" as they were originally known were purchased for $600,000 (about $1,000 per acre) from Bethlehem Steel.  The fields began the grooming process as the football practice fields were being constructed, including the "bowl" area that is now the site of the football stadium.  In 1962, the Varsity House was constructed to house locker rooms and an equipment space. The campus evolved slowly as a track was installed in the late 1960s, and a cross country course was designed and created.  A soccer/lacrosse game field near the track was also built in the late 1960s.

With all the added facilities and activities in the department, there was a need for a funding source to maintain and enhance the "Saucon Fields."  In 1980, Murray H. Goodman '48 made a substantial gift to create an endowment fund that would provide such resources.  Soon after this gift, Lehigh renamed this 500+ acre complex, the Murray H. Goodman Campus.

Other University departments that call Goodman Campus home include Lehigh Transportation and Lehigh University Advancement as well Bright View, which is a contract maintenance company for the University.
