ORLANDO, Fla. - Wednesday morning, Lehigh fell to East Carolina University, 4-3. With the loss, Lehigh moves to 3-10 on the season. With the win, East Carolina improves to 2-4 on its young season.
"This was the best I've seen our team compete all season," head coach Sophia Geier said. "We battled on every court against a really strong opponent and put ourselves in position to win. If we bring this same fight into conference play, I'm really excited about what this group can do."
The match began with ECU claiming the doubles point thanks to wins on courts one and two. Lena Dogadalski and Giselle Vlassis led Skylar Moody and Ivona Savekova, 6-5, on court three before their match was stopped due to the results on the other two doubles courts.
In singles play, Lehigh earned victories on three courts. On court one, Maggie Forkner defeated Ivona Savekova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Giselle Vlassis followed with a win on court three, topping Xenia Jeromin, 6-3, 6-4. Alina Shyani added another point for the Mountain Hawks on court four, rallying for a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 victory over Veronika Pavlenko.
Despite Lehigh's three singles wins, East Carolina was able to clinch the match with victories on courts two, five and six.
