Mountain Hawks Kick Off Stretch Run Sunday at Army West Point

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Back from a weekend off from dual competition, No. 20 Lehigh opens the February stretch run with an EIWA dual Sunday at Army West Point. Match time is 2 p.m. with video on FloWrestling and audio coverage on FOX Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM and LVFOXSports.com.

The Mountain Hawks went 4-0 in dual meet action in January, including wins over Navy and Princeton the weekend of Jan. 17-18. Last weekend, Lehigh set a large, mostly unattached contingent to the Bloomsburg Open with Mountain Hawk wrestlers winning seven brackets. Seven Lehigh wrestlers appear in the initial NCAA Coaches' Rankings, announced Jan. 29, led by Sheldon Seymour, who is fourth at 125, and Luke Stanich and Nathan Taylor, who come in at No. 5 at 141, and 285, respectively. Army West Point has won its last two duals, both coming against EIWA opponents. Last weekend the Black Knights defeated Bucknell at home. Army's lineup features five nationally-ranked wrestlers.

No. 20 Lehigh went on the road and picked up its fourth straight win as the Mountain Hawks took down Princeton 30-9 Jan. 18 at Jadwin Gym. The Mountain Hawks won seven bouts, including three bonus-point victories. Graduate student JT Davis clinched the dual with a fall at 197, while senior Max Brignola picked up a bonus point win in a top 12 showdown at 165. Lehigh's three returning All-Americans (Sheldon Seymour, Ryan Crookham and Luke Stanich) once again staked the Mountain Hawks to an early lead. Stanich picked up a 19-3 technical fall over Matthew Martino to put Lehigh up 11-0. Coming out of the break, 10th-ranked Brignola dominated No. 12 Ty Whalen in a 15-3 major decision. Brignola scored two first period takedowns and added two more in the third, plus a second period escape, penalty point and riding time. Rylan Rogers won at 184 prior to Davis' pin at 197. Princeton forfeited to Nathan Taylor in the final bout.

Nineteen Mountain Hawks competed at the Jan. 24 Bloomsburg Open with Lehigh wrestlers claiming seven brackets. Lehigh's champions were Mason Ziegler (125), Luke Stanich (141A), Matt Repos (149A), Logan Rozynski (157A), Jared Schoppe (184) and JT Davis (197). Jadon Skellenger and Anthony Evanitsky reached the finals at 157B but there was no bout contested. Five other Mountain Hawks earned top six places. Ziegler, Stanich, Rozynski and Davis all competed attached, along with Ryan Crookham and Carter Bailey. Everyone else competed unattached.

Seven Lehigh wrestlers appear in the first NCAA coaches' ranking announced Jan. 29. Three of Lehigh's seven ranked wrestlers are in the top five of their respective weight classes. Graduate student Sheldon Seymour is fourth at 125, sophomore Luke Stanich is fifth at 141 and senior Nathan Taylor is fifth at 285. The coaches' ranking is one of several criteria that will be evaluated by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee during the at-large and seeding process for the NCAA Championships. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. The second coaches' ranking and first RPI will be announced Feb. 12

Army West Point is 2-4 in duals with the Black Knights coming off back-to-back EIWA wins over American and Bucknell. The Black Knights knocked off Bucknell 23-12 last Saturday in their most recent action. Over the holiday break Army went to the Southern Scuffle, where Gunner Filipowicz was the runner up at 165. Filipowicz is the highest ranked of the five ranked Black Knights, coming in at No. 15. Troy Nickerson is in his first season as head coach at Army West Point.

Army is Lehigh's fourth most-often wrestled opponent, trailing only Penn State, Navy, and Cornell. Sunday's dual will be the 74th in the series, with Lehigh leading 60-10-3. Lehigh is 23-2-1 in its last 26 duals with Army. The Mountain Hawks have won nine of the last 10 duals in the series. Lehigh and Army are meeting for the 10th consecutive season following a break in the series from 2010 through 2017.

Lehigh heads to Baltimore on Friday, Feb. 6 to face EIWA foe Morgan State. It will be the Mountain Hawks' first-ever trip to Morgan State, which visited Bethlehem last season in its return to varsity status. The Mountain Hawks return to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall to face Penn and Bucknell Feb. 13-14.
