Alvey's Late Bucket Pushes Lehigh Past Colgate 78-77

1/10/2026 5:17:00 PM | Men's Basketball

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Hank Alvey's layup with three seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner for Lehigh men's basketball in a 78-77 road victory over the Colgate Raiders at Cotterell Court on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Edouard Benoit recorded career-highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds on route to Lehigh's first road win of the season.

Lehigh (6-11, 2-2 PL) has now won two games in a row after defeating Holy Cross 66-58 on Wednesday. The Mountain Hawks have now defeated Colgate (9-8, 3-1 PL) in each of the last two meetings dating back to a 94-68 win over the Raiders last season at Stabler Arena. The win marks Lehigh's first win at Cotterell Court since 2018.

Nasir Whitlock found himself in foul trouble early, picking up two in the first two minutes of the game. Despite this, Lehigh played Colgate to a 10-10 tie at the first media timeout. Benoit led the charge for Lehigh, knocking down two triples to help the Mountain Hawks lead 20-17 with 11:13 to play.

The Mountain Hawks kept their foot on the gas pedal, extending the lead to seven off a Caleb Thomas transition layup. Lehigh's defense was opportunistic in the first half, forcing seven Colgate turnovers while only committing one themselves. The sophomore duo of Benoit and Alvey combined for 28 points in the first half to put Lehigh in front 41-38 at the break.

Lehigh extended their advantage to open the second half, leading 49-44 at the first media timeout of the frame. The Raiders fought to cut their deficit to one, but a Whitlock triple and free throws from Peter Kramer extended Lehigh's lead to six points with 10:50 remaining. Colgate responded with seven unanswered to take their first lead since the 12:41 mark of the first half.

The Mountain Hawks and Raiders traded buckets through the final ten minutes, with the lead changing hands four times. Colgate gave themselves a five-point cushion with just over two minutes remaining thanks to free throws from Kyle Carlesimo. Joshua Ingram responded with a triple on the other end, but a Jalen Cox and-one put Colgate ahead by five with 1:35 remaining.

Whitlock knocked down a catch-and-shoot triple out of the timeout, but the Mountain Hawks still trailed by four after two more Cox free throws. Benoit banked in a triple on the ensuing possession to bring Lehigh within one with 47 seconds on the clock. After holding the Raiders scoreless, Alvey connected on a layup inside with three seconds remaining to put Lehigh on top for good.

Lehigh shot 40.7% (24-59) from the field, a blazing 52.6% (10-19) from three, and 76.9% (20-26) from the free throw line. Colgate posted shooting splits of 46.6% (27-58) from the floor, 41.2% (7-17) from distance, and 76.2% (16-21) from the charity stripe. The Raiders earned a narrow 36-35 edge on the glass, but the Mountain Hawks forced 10 turnovers to their own seven.

Benoit shined for the Mountain Hawks recording a double-double of 27 points and 11 rebounds, both of which being career-highs. The Canadian sophomore went 9-16 from the floor and 6-7 from three. Benoit's performance comes off the heels of a 22-point outing vs. Holy Cross on Wednesday.

Alvey continued his hot start to Patriot League play, tallying a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds while also blocking four shots. Alvey has surpassed the 20-point barrier in all four Patriot League games thus far.

Despite facing foul trouble early on, Whitlock scored 12 points in only 23 minutes of action. Whitlock has reached double-figures in 16 of Lehigh's 17 games. Ingram also scored in double-digits with 11 points to go along with four assists, a block, and a steal. Thomas chipped in four points and four assists.

Cox led the Raiders with 22 points while Andrew Alekseyenko (16p), Ben Tweedy (13p), and Carlesimo (12p) also scored in double-figures.

Lehigh will be back on the road on Wednesday, January 14 at 6 p.m. for a meeting with the Boston University Terriers at Case Gymnasium in Boston.
