Lehigh Outlasts Boston U. 93-91 In Overtime For Third Straight Win

1/14/2026 9:35:00 PM | Men's Basketball

BOSTON – Junior captain Nasir Whitlock banked in a three with 2.4 seconds left in regulation to tie the game, helping Lehigh men's basketball defeat the Boston University Terriers 93-91 in overtime. Whitlock finished the game with 30 points, and the Mountain Hawks won their third game in a row.

Lehigh (7-11, 3-2 PL) wins its third game in a row after besting Holy Cross and Colgate last week. The Mountain Hawks picked up their first win at Case Gymnasium since defeating Boston U. (7-11, 2-3 PL) 84-79 in the 2024 Patriot League semifinal.

Defense was the story of the game in the early going, as Joshua Ingram nabbed two steals for the Mountain Hawks within the first five minutes. Back-to-back triples from Nasir Whitlock put Lehigh up 13-4 at the 14:30 mark, prompting a BU timeout. The Terriers cut Lehigh's lead down to five, but an Ingram three-pointer and free throws from Edouard Benoit gave the Mountain Hawks a ten-point cushion with 7:11 to play.

After Peter Kramer extended the lead to 12 on a fast break layup, the Terriers scored six unanswered to set the score at 29-23 with 3:31 remaining. Only leading by five with a minute remaining, the Mountain Hawks scored seven unanswered to take a 42-30 advantage into halftime thanks to a Whitlock triple as time expired in the first half.

The Terriers opened the second half on a 5-0 run to cut their deficit to seven, but the Mountain Hawks punched back with five unanswered to go back up by 12. BU and Lehigh traded runs until the Terriers brought the lead back down to seven near the midway point of the half. An injury to sophomore Hank Alvey forced Lehigh's reserve bigs into action, and the Terriers used the interior to cut Lehigh's lead down to two with 7:30 remaining.

BU tied the game at 64-64 on a Ben Defty layup, but a Whitlock jumper and Benoit three put Lehigh back up by five with 5:15 left. Alvey re-entered the game for Lehigh with just under four minutes remaining. The Terriers took their first lead of the game with 2:05 on the clock, but Whitlock quickly put the Mountain Hawks back on top with a layup on the other end. Two possessions later, Lehigh found themselves trailing 74-71 with 50.4 seconds remaining in the game. After forcing a stop with eight seconds left, Whitlock hoisted a deep three and banked it in with 2.4 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

Jalen Vazquez knocked down a triple to open the scoring in the overtime period before Defty responded with a bucket for BU on the other end. Lehigh found some cushion by way of a bucket and two free throws from Benoit to put the Mountain Hawks up by five. BU tied the game once again with a personal 5-0 run from Michael McNair. Another Whitlock jumper and two free throws from Vazquez put the Mountain Hawks back up by four. The Terriers then were forced to foul, and Lehigh made its free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Lehigh shot the ball very effectively to the tune of 49.2% (31-63) from the field, 45.8% (11-24) from three, and 87.0% (20-23) from the free throw line. The Mountain Hawks went a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line in overtime. BU shot 53.3% (32-60) from the field, 37.5% (6-16) from distance, and 80.8% (21-26) from the charity stripe. The Terriers narrowly outrebounded the Mountain Hawks 31-27, but Lehigh nabbed nine steals to BU's one and scored 13 points off turnovers.

Benoit continued his hot streak, scoring 23 points with eight rebounds on 6-10 shooting and 9-10 from the free throw line. Benoit has now surpassed 20+ points in three consecutive games.

Ingram put up 16 points with four steals, three rebounds, three made triples and two assists. Alvey joined him in double-figures with ten points in only 26 minutes of action. Vazquez also contributed a career-high nine points, including four clutch free throws in overtime.

Defty led the Terriers with a double-double of 26 points and ten rebounds while McNair scored 24 points. Azmar Abdullah (15p), Chance Gladden (10p), and Donte Tisinger Jr. also reached double-figures for BU.
