BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With a league-leading six wrestlers advancing to Saturday's championship finals, the Lehigh wrestling team leads the 12-team field after day one of the EIWA Championships Friday at Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks placed a wrestler in the top eight in nine out of 10 weight classes and went 6-1 in Friday night's semifinal bouts to accumulate 120 points.
The Mountain Hawks lead second place Bucknell by 18.5 points entering Saturday's final day of competition. Drexel (93.5), Army West Point (93) and Binghamton (90) round out the top five.
Lehigh's six finalists are junior Sheldon Seymour (125), senior Malyke Hines (149), first-year Logan Rozynski (157), sophomore Caden Rogers (184), senior Michael Beard (197) and graduate student Owen Trephan (285). Hines and Beard will go for their second EIWA titles Saturday, while Trephan will wrestle for his third conference title, having won two ACC championships.
Seymour, Beard and Trephan all secured automatic qualification for the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia.
All three of Lehigh's NCAA qualifiers reached Saturday's finals behind two bonus wins Friday with all three winning by fall in the semifinals.
Seymour won a 21-5 technical fall over Franklin & Marshall's Jack Parker in the quarterfinals and then picked up a win by fall over Binghamton's Carson Wagner with one second remaining in the opening period in the semis. He will face Army's Charlie Farmer in the finals.
Beard's day began with his 12th technical fall victory of the season, as he toppled RJ Moore of F&M 21-6 in the first period. In the semifinals, Beard built a 20-6 lead over Navy's Payton Thomas before securing his second fall of the season at the 4:47 mark. Beard will face Bucknell's Dillon Bechtold in the finals at 197.
Trephan's first EIWA tournament began with a 17-4 major decision over Bucknell's Logan Shephard and then in the semifinals, Trephan led Morgan State's Xavier Doolin 7-1 when he sucked him back and secured the fall at 4:48. His finals match will be against Binghamton's Cory Day.
Hines is back in the EIWA finals for the first time since 2021, with a 7-2 decision over LIU's Drew Witham and a 5-1 win over Binghamton's Ivan Garcia. A matchup with Army's top seed Trae McDaniel awaits Hines, with the winner securing automatic qualification for the NCAA Championships.
Rozynski looks to give Lehigh a true first-year EIWA champion for the second consecutive season. He posted a 5-2 win over Sacred Heart's Felix Lettini and then defeated Bucknell's Cade Wirnsberger 2-0 in the semifinals behind a second period escape and third period ride out. In the finals, Rozynski will meet Drexel's Luke Nichter with the winner automatically punching their ticket to Philadelphia.
Caden Rogers' tournament began with a 12-4 major decision over Hunter Perez of Sacred Heart. In the semifinals, he avenged a loss to Navy's Daniel Williams in the January dual meet with a 2-0 decision. Like Rozynski, Rogers escaped in the second period and then rode out the third on top to secure victory. He will face Hofstra's Ross McFarland in the finals at another one-bid weight.
First-year Matty Lopes was the only Lehigh semifinalist to not advance to the finals. After a 15-5 major over Braxton Fries-Appello of Sacred Heart in the quarterfinals, Lopes faced Kurt Phipps of Bucknell in the semifinals at 133. A takedown in the third period gave Lopes a 3-1 lead, but Phipps answered with an escape and takedown with about 30 seconds remaining to take the lead. After an apparent reversal, challenge brick and escape, officials reviewed the end sequence with Phipps being awarded a 5-4 decision. Lopes will face Micah Roes of Binghamton in Saturday morning's consolation semifinals.
All 10 Lehigh entrants won at least one bout on Friday. Junior Carter Bailey (141) and sophomore Rylan Rogers (174) will compete for seventh place. Both wrestlers lost their first match Friday, came back to win their second and then were defeated in consolation quarterfinal action.
Deferred first-year Richie Grungo pinned LIU's James Johnston in the opening round at 165 for Lehigh's first win of the day, but dropped his next two matches and was eliminated. Grungo finishes his first season of eligibility with a 17-12 record.
