15 Hits And Three Home Runs Lead Lehigh Past UMBC 13-3

3/7/2025 6:27:00 PM | Baseball

BALTIMORE – Lehigh baseball kicked off a weekend series in Charm City against the UMBC Retrievers on Friday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks had 15 hits and three home runs in a dominant 13-3 eight-inning win over the Retrievers.

Senior Marcus Danchision picked up his second win of the season for Lehigh (4-4), striking out three while allowing six hits in 5.2 innings. UMBC (1-7) starter Zach Robinson was credited with the loss after allowing five earned runs and seven hits in 3.0 innings.

After two scoreless innings in the first and second, the Mountain Hawks scored the game's first runs in the third. Jack Frankovic got aboard via walk, setting up a two-run shot to left field from Jake Whitlinger to put Lehigh ahead 2-0. The Retrievers scored on a sac-fly in the bottom of the frame to make it 2-1 after three.

In the top of the fourth, Ryan Davis singled home Justin Butler followed by an RBI single from Frankovic to set the score at 4-1. In his next at bat after going yard, Whitlinger did it again, crushing a home run to left field to score three runs and put Lehigh ahead 7-1. A Danny Wyatt RBI double and Jesiah Carpenter sac-fly for UMBC set the score at 7-3 through four innings.

The score remained unchanged until the top of the seventh inning when Butler recorded his first home run of the season, scoring three runs for Lehigh. The three-run shot was Butler's 26th career home run, setting him seven away from becoming Lehigh's all-time leader.

The Mountain Hawks would score three more runs the following inning thanks to RBIs from Whitlinger and Trystan Crawford. Leading 13-3 at the end of the eighth, Lehigh secured the series-opening win with the run rule in place.

Whitlinger had a monster day for the Mountain Hawks, batting 4-5 with six RBIs, three runs scored and two home runs. Frankovic was perfect on the day, batting 3-3 with three hits, two doubles, an RBI and a walk. Dom Patrizi and Aidan Quinn both recorded two hits on the day while Crawford, Butler, Owen Walewander and Davis also got hits.

Julio Ermigiotti finished the game on the mound in relief of Danchision, striking out three in 2.1 scoreless innings.

The Mountain Hawks will play game two of the series against UMBC on Saturday, March 8 at 2 p.m. from Alumni Field.
