Lehigh Dominates In 20-5 Win Over Albright

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball played its first midweek game of the season on Tuesday afternoon, welcoming the Albright College Lions to J. David Walker Field. The Mountain Hawks recorded 14 hits in a dominant 20-5 victory.
Sophomore Grady Golier earned the win for Lehigh (3-4), striking out two in 1.2 innings of relief in a game where six pitchers took the mound for the Mountain Hawks. Albright (2-2) starter Hayden McDon was credited with the loss after allowing the first run of the game in the first inning.
The Mountain Hawks got on the board first thanks to a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the first inning. Lehigh used the second inning to extend their lead, beginning with an RBI double from Ryan Davis that scored Raffaele Rogers. Jack Frankovic then delivered Lehigh its first home run of the season, sending himself and Davis past home plate. Jake Whitlinger then stole third base and scampered home on a throwing error to put Lehigh ahead 5-0 after two.
The Lions were able to respond in the third inning when a wild pitch allowed an Albright runner to cross home plate. A Rogers RBI groundout in the bottom of the frame put the Mountain Hawks back up by five through three innings.
The fifth inning saw Albright put forth a respectable offensive effort. The Lions scored two runs on an RBI double followed by an RBI single to set the score at 6-4. Another Albright run scored off of a Lehigh error, and suddenly the Lions only trailed by one run headed to the bottom of the fifth.
After the Lions threatened in the top of the fifth, Lehigh's offense took back control of the game in the bottom of the inning. Rogers sent Justin Butler and Aidan Quinn home on an RBI double followed by an RBI groundout from Davis to set the score at 9-5. The next inning, first-year Ian Wirtz cleared the bases with a double to left field, and RBIs from Edwin Betances and Quinn put the Mountain Hawks ahead 15-5 through seven.
As the Lehigh bullpen continued to keep the Lions at bay, the Mountain Hawks added even more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Whitlinger and Betances both connected on RBI doubles to score Lehigh's 16th and 17th runs of the game. First-year Cadeyrn Ahearn registered his first career hit, scoring two runs in the process. An RBI groundout from Sam Holtz set the score at 20-5 to conclude the game's scoring.
Tuesday's win marks the first time the Mountain Hawks have scored 20 or more runs in a game since a 20-15 victory over Saint Joseph's in 2019. Ten Lehigh players registered hits, including multi-hit days from Whitlinger, Dom Patrizi, Betances and Wirtz.
Anthony Gonzalez started on the mound for the Mountain Hawks, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings. Jack Ingino, Ralph Gariano, Golier, Cole Kochanowicz and Val Taddei also pitched for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks return to action this weekend for a three-game road series at UMBC. Game one is slated for 3 p.m. on Friday, March 7 from Alumni Field.
