3/22/2025 6:47:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Patriot League play began for Lehigh baseball on Saturday afternoon from J. David Walker Field as the Mountain Hawks hosted the Holy Cross Crusaders in doubleheader. The Crusaders took a seven-inning game one 13-4 and defeated the Mountain Hawks 12-1 in eight innings in game two to sweep the doubleheader.

Earning the win in game one for Holy Cross (10-11, 2-0 PL) was starter Danny Macchiarola, who tossed a complete 7.0 innings with eight strikeouts, six hits and three earned runs. Receiving the loss was Lehigh (10-9, 0-2 PL) starter Cole Leaman after he threw 4.1 innings while allowing five runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Holy Cross's offense started fast, sending four runs across home plate in the top of the first inning. Quickly facing a 4-0 deficit, Lehigh's offense fought back over the next several innings. Owen Walewander connected on a solo home run to get the scoring started for the Mountain Hawks in the bottom of the second. RBI singles from Jake Whitlinger, Ryan Cochran and Aidan Quinn in the third inning tied the game at 4-4 through three.

Jimmy King broke the tie in the top of the fifth for the Crusaders on an RBI single followed by a Connor Peek RBI bunt in the sixth inning that put Holy Cross up two. The game broke open for the Crusaders in the top of the seventh, as Holy Cross sent seven runs across the plate to put game one out of reach.

Whitlinger, Cochran, Quinn, Walewander, and Raffaele Rogers recorded hits for the Mountain Hawks in game one. Julio Ermigiotti and Max Trenoze also appeared on the mound for Lehigh in game one.

Holy Cross designated hitter Sean Scanlon hit second and started on the mound for the Crusaders in game two, tossing 4.0 innings with two strikeouts, four hits and one earned run. The win was credited to Jake Lenahan, who struck out five in 4.0 scoreless innings of relief. Lehigh starter Marcus Danchision picked up the loss after allowing three earned runs on six hits in 3.0 innings.

The Crusaders once again got off to a fast start in game two, scoring three runs in the top of the first. The lead was extended to six the following inning on RBI singles from King and John LaFleur. The Mountain Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI groundout from Ryan Davis to set the score at 6-1.

Holy Cross's offense continued to produce in the middle and late innings. The Crusaders put up two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth to take a commanding 12-1 lead. The Mountain Hawks were retired in order in the bottom of the eighth, resulting in the game being called after eight innings.

Cochran, Edwin Betances, Justin Butler and Rogers tallied hits in game two. Jake Mulvehill and Grady Golier also saw action on the mound for Lehigh.

The Mountain Hawks return to J. David Walker Field on Sunday, March 23 at noon for a doubleheader against the Army West Point Black Knights.
