
Mountain Hawks Edged by No. 3 Army

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men's lacrosse suffered its first league loss of the season, falling 13-4 to No. 3 Army Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks dropped to 2-5 (1-1 PL), while the Black Knights improved to 7-0 (3-0 PL).
Army opened the game with the first two goals. First-year attackman Colin French responded with back-to-back goals to tie the game at 2-2. However, the Black Knights quickly took control, going on a 4-0 run. Junior attackman Andrew Kelly stopped the Army streak, pulling Lehigh within three at 7:12 in the first half. But Army ended the half with a 2-0 run, taking an 8-3 lead into halftime.
In the second half, first-year attackman Chris Rathwell scored the opening goal of the third quarter just four minutes in. However, Army ended the game on a 5-0 run to seal the victory.
Lehigh was held to just one goal in both the second and third quarters, and was shut out in the fourth frame.
Reigning Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Weekt Sean Dow continued his impressive performance, going 16-of-20 at the faceoff X while scooping up nine ground balls. Sophomore Connor Riley also contributed, winning 1-of-1 at the "X."
Junior defenseman Richard Checo had a standout game, finishing with a season-high seven caused turnovers, just one shy of his career-high and one shy of the NCAA single-game record, which he tied last season in the Patriot League Semifinals at Navy.
Sophomore Kasey Heath had another strong showing in goal, recording 12 saves for his seventh consecutive double-digit save performance. Sean Byrne made nine saves, and Evan Richardson finished with two saves for the Black Knights.
Army's Jackson Eicher led all players with seven points, scoring six goals and adding one assist.
The Black Knights held a 49-27 advantage in shots, while Lehigh won the ground ball battle 34-33. The Mountain Hawks committed 26 turnovers, while Army finished with 19.
Next up, Lehigh will play at Bucknell on March 22 at 12 p.m.
