Mountain Hawks Win Series, Split Doubleheader Against LIU

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball concluded its weekend series with a doubleheader against the LIU Sharks on Saturday afternoon at J. David Walker Field. The Mountain Hawks earned a 4-3 win in game one and dropped a 4-3 decision in game two.
First-year pitcher Jake Mulvehill earned the win for Lehigh (2-4) in game one, striking out three in 3.0 innings of relief for starter Cole Leaman. LIU (4-8) starter Nicholas Finarelli was credited with the loss after allowing nine hits and four earned runs in 5.0 innings of work. Junior Tommy Lamar picked up his first save of the season.
The Mountain Hawks struck first in game one, as Ryan Cochran dashed past home plate in the bottom of the first off of a wild pitch. Pitching dominated the following innings until Lehigh broke through in the fourth. Owen Walewander and Jack Frankovic got aboard with singles which led to a Jake Whitlinger sac-fly to make it 2-0 Mountain Hawks.
In the bottom of the fifth, Lehigh extended their lead to four when Walewander hit a two RBI double to send Andrew Kohl and Aidan Quinn past home plate. The Sharks responded with a bases loaded walk and an RBI groundout in the top of the fifth to cut the Lehigh lead in half. Matthew McGurk would then add another run for the Sharks with an RBI single in the top of the ninth, but Lamar struck out Chandler Ketchup swinging for the final out of the inning to seal the Lehigh victory.
Walewander starred for the Mountain Hawks, batting 3-4 while batting in two runs. Quinn recorded his second multi-hit outing of the weekend, going 2-3 with a walk and one run scored. Dom Patrizi, Cochran, Kohl and Frankovic also recorded hits for Lehigh.
The winning pitcher in game two was LIU starter Justin DeCastro after he threw 7.0 innings two strikeouts, five hits and two earned runs. Lehigh starter David Andolina was credited with the loss after allowing three earned runs in 2.2 innings of work. Evan Panjwani picked up the save for the Sharks.
Ryan Rivera got the scoring started for LIU in the top of the first inning with an RBI single that sent Ketchup past home plate. Lehigh responded in the bottom half of the inning with a Quinn RBI single to tie the game at one apiece. The Sharks regained the lead the following inning after a bases loaded hit by pitch sent Mason Breton home. In the top of the third, a Cord Dobrinski double scored Breton once again to extend LIU's lead to two.
While DeCastro continued to keep the Mountain Hawks at bay on the mound, an RBI single from LIU's Joseph Durso put the Sharks up 4-1 through four innings. The Mountain Hawks finally broke the seal in the fifth when Cochran reached first base on a sac-bunt that scored Whitlinger. The Sharks led by two for the next two innings until a Kohl RBI double sent first-year Bobby Kleckner past home plate to bring Lehigh within one. After holding the Sharks scoreless in the top of the ninth, the Mountain Hawks were unable to tie the game in the bottom of the frame.
Whitlinger, Cochran, Quinn, Edwin Betances, Kohl and Trystan Crawford all recorded hits for Lehigh in game two.
The Mountain Hawks return to J. David Walker Field on Tuesday, March 4 at 2:30 p.m. for a game against Albright College.
