Reinsel's Podium Finish Paces Men at Midlands Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. – Junior Owen Reinsel reached the podium with an eighth place finish to lead a contingent of eight Lehigh men's wrestlers at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, which wrapped up Tuesday at Ryan Fieldhouse. Reinsel was one of four Mountain Hawks to reach Monday night's quarterfinals and the only one to win his fourth-round consolation Tuesday morning.

Reinsel won his first two matches Monday, including a technical fall win over Jimmy Nugent of Central Michigan in his opening bout. A 4-2 loss to Ethen Miller (Virginia Tech) dropped Reinsel to the consolations. Tuesday morning, Reinsel won 5-4 over Sam Cartella of Northwestern, keyed by a reversal and two-point near fall in the second period, to secure his podium place. After a loss in the consolation quarterfinals, Reinsel dropped his seventh place bout 5-2 to Maddox Shaw of Ohio State.

Also competing for Lehigh at Northwestern were sophomore Matty Lopes (133), first-year Anthony Evanitsky (149), sophomore Matt Repos (149), first-year Brady Collins (174), sophomore Richie Grungo (174) and deferred first-years Dom Federici and Bekhruz Sadriddinov, both of who competed at 174. Lopes and Evanitsky competed unattached at the Midlands.

Lopes, Federici and Grungo all joined Reinsel in Monday night's quarterfinals, with all three also suffering losses.

In the quarterfinals, Lopes ran into unattached wrestler Reineri Ortega, a two-time age group World Champion for Cuba. Ortega won a 13-4 major decision. Lopes lost his bloodround match 11-4 to Markel Baker of Northern Illinois.

Federici won decisions over Graham Gambrall of Oregon State and Eddie Enright of Northwestern before dropping his next two matches by four and then two points.

Grungo edged Pitt's Bode Marlow 11-9 in the opening round and then won by medical forfeit to reach the quarterfinals. He dropped his next two matches to opponents from Indiana and Cal Poly.

Evanitsky, Repos and Collins all went 1-2 at the Midlands while Sadriddinov dropped both of his matches.

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 10 when the Mountain Hawks welcome longtime rival Cornell to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall for a 1 p.m. match. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com.
