No. 19 Lehigh to Face Pair of Top 10 Teams at Collegiate Duals in Nashville

12/18/2025 10:09:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With final exams now complete, No. 19 Lehigh returns to action at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals in Nashville, Tenn. The Mountain Hawks will square off against No. 10 Illinois and No. 3 Iowa State Sunday at Montgomery Bell Academy. The Illinois dual begins at 4 p.m. ET while the Iowa State dual begins at 6 p.m. ET. Both duals will stream on FloWrestling.org.

Lehigh is looking to finish the 2025 portion of its dual schedule on a high note after dropping its last three duals. Most recently, the Mountain Hawks were edged by Pittsburgh in their home opener Dec. 5 and then fell at No. 1 Penn State on Dec. 7. Senior heavyweight Nathan Taylor made his first appearances in 13 months and defeated a pair of top-15 opponents to lead Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks had a 5-5 split with Pittsburgh, with bonus points ultimately tilting the dual in the Panthers' favor. Lehigh will face Illinois for the second time this season. The Fighting Illini defeated the Mountain Hawks at the National Duals Invitational in November. Lehigh's dual with Iowa State will be the first between the two programs since November 2003.

Seniors Carter Bailey (141) and Nathan Taylor (285) won decisions for No. 14 Lehigh, but top-ranked and four-time defending NCAA champion Penn State captured the other eight bouts to claim the 113th meeting of Lehigh's most-contested dual series 36-6 Dec. 7 at Rec Hall. Penn State scored bonus points in six of its eight wins. Bailey put Lehigh on the board at 141 with a 5-1 decision over Cael Nasdeo. He picked up a first period takedown, a third period escape and riding time advantage. Taylor closed the match with his second ranked win of his opening weekend of competition, defeating Cole Mirasola 7-2 in the final bout at 285. Mirasola led 1-0 late in the second, when Taylor turned a Mirasola shot into a late takedown to lead. Taylor escaped early in the third and turned another Mirasola shot into a takedown to win 7-2.

After more than a year away from competition, heavyweight Nathan Taylor returned to action against Pittsburgh with a 5-4 decision over Dayton Pitzer. Taylor went 2-0 in his return weekend with ranked wins over Pitzer and Penn State's Cole Mirasola. A 2024 EIWA Champion and NCAA round of 12 finisher, Taylor suffered a season-ending injury at the 2024 Journeymen Collegiate Classic and needed nearly 13 months to return. Taylor is ranked sixth at 285 by InterMat.

Seven Lehigh wrestlers appear in the latest rankings from FloWrestling and WrestleStat, while six Mountain Hawks appear in the InterMat rankings. Lehigh has four wrestlers ranked by both Amateur Wrestling News and The Open Mat. With his return to action, senior Nathan Taylor is now ranked top seven across all five outlets. Graduate student Sheldon Seymour (125) and senior Max Brignola (165) are ranked in the top 10 across the board, while sophomore Logan Rozynski is ranked by all five outlets at 157. Ryan Crookham (133) and Luke Stanich (141) were all ranked in the top five across the board in preseason rankings, but have been removed from most rankings since they have yet to compete this season.

Illinois brings a 5-2 mark into the Collegiate Wrestling Duals with the Fighting Illini slated to wrestle Cornell before the Mountain Hawks on Sunday. The Fighting Illini finished third at the SIUE Cougar Clash on Dec. 7. Illinois went 3-2 at the National Duals Invitational, finishing in seventh place. In its most recent dual Illinois defeated Missouri on Nov. 24. Eight Illinois wrestlers appear in the latest InterMat rankings, led by Lucas Byrd, the returning NCAA Champion and No. 1-ranked wrestler at 133. Kannon Webster (157) and Braeden Scoles (165) join Byrd as top 10 wrestlers. Mike Poeta is in his fifth season as head coach at his alma mater.

Lehigh has a limited history against Illinois with Sunday's dual marking just the sixth all-time meeting against the Fighting Illini. The Mountain Hawks and Fighting Illini met earlier this season at the National Duals Invitational, with Illinois winning 21-13.

Iowa State is up to No. 3 in the NWCA Top 25 after a 2-0 start to the dual season that includes a win over rival Iowa on Nov. 30. The Cyclones will square off against No. 2 Ohio State before facing Lehigh. Iowa State won the team title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational with four individual champions: Evan Frost (133), Anthony Echemendia (141), Rocky Elam (197) and Yonger Bastida (285). The Cyclones feature a ranked wrestler at every weight class including five top-five grapplers. Elam and Bastida are both ranked No. 1 at their respective weights. Kevin Dresser is in his ninth season as Iowa State's head coach.

Lehigh and Iowa State will meet for the first time since November 2003. The programs wrestled 24 times in 25 years between 1969 and 1993, with the only exception being 1986. The last meeting between Lehigh and Iowa State was the first dual meet in the newly-renovated Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.

Lehigh may send a small contingent to the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill. The Mountain Hawks will open 2026 with three home duals inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Lehigh will host Cornell Jan. 10 at 1 p.m., American Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. and Navy Jan. 17 at 2 p.m.
