NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 19 Lehigh battled a pair of top 10 opponents Sunday at Journeymen Wrestling's Collegiate Duals at Montgomery Bell Academy. The Mountain Hawks began the day with a 24-12 loss to No. 10 Illinois and then dropped a 26-11 decision to No. 3 Iowa State.
Lehigh won three bouts in both duals, with graduate student Sheldon Seymour going 2-0 Sunday with a pair of ranked victories to move to 8-0 on the season.
Seymour opened the Illinois dual with a 6-4 decision over Spencer Moore, behind takedowns in each of the first two periods. Against Iowa State, Seymour gave up the first takedown to Stevo Poulin, but rallied with takedowns in the second and third periods to win 9-6.
Illinois (7-2) won six straight bouts after Seymour's win to take control of the dual. Two head-to-head results were flipped from the teams' Nov. 15 meeting at the National Duals Invitational in Tulsa, Okla. At 165, Braeden Scoles avenged a loss to Max Brignola in Tulsa with a 5-1 decision. The top 10 battle saw Scoles ride out the second period and score the bout's only takedown in the third.
The other flipped result was at 184 where junior Rylan Rogers made a first period takedown stand in a 4-2 decision over Chris Moore.
Lehigh picked up its third win at 285, where senior Nathan Taylor won by injury default over Luke Luffman in the second period. Taylor was leading 7-2 in the second period when Luffman injured his leg trying to fight off a Taylor takedown attempt.
The Iowa State match saw Lehigh lead 8-7 after four bouts. In addition to Seymour's win, senior Carter Bailey won by technical fall 15-0 in 3:00 over Osmany Diversent at 141, while the Cyclones' Evan and Jacob Frost posted wins at 133 and 149.
Brignola won a 6-1 decision over Connor Euton at 165 to bring Lehigh within 12-11 after six bouts but the Cyclones claimed the final four bouts.
At 174, sophomore Richie Grungo scored an early third period takedown to tie Aiden Riggins at 9-9, but Riggins scored the final eight points to claim a 17-9 major decision.
Bidding for his second ranked win of the day, Rogers engaged in a tight battle with Isaac Dean at 184. The match was tied 1-1 through regulation and sudden victory with both wrestlers coming close to takedowns but ending up thwarted by good defense. In the tiebreakers, Dean first escaped in just six seconds, and Rogers matched the time, sending the bout to a second sudden victory period tied 2-2. In the second sudden victory period Dean was able to secure a takedown and a 5-2 decision.
In the final bout of the day, Taylor took on top-ranked Yonger Bastida. The match was scoreless after one period, with a Bastida takedown taken off the board following a Lehigh challenge. Taylor escaped to lead 1-0 after two, but Bastida broke a 1-1 tie with a third period takedown to win 4-2, handing Taylor his first loss of the season.
The Mountain Hawks (3-6) will return to dual action on Saturday, Jan. 10 when they welcome Cornell to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall for a 1 p.m. dual. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-758-4263 during business hours.
