Mountain Hawks Home For Duals With Cornell, American

1/8/2026 1:07:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 22 Lehigh returns to dual competition and returns to Leeman-Turner Arena this weekend. The Mountain Hawks will host longtime rival Cornell Saturday at 1 p.m. for the 103rd meeting of one of Lehigh's most-contested dual series and then will open EIWA dual competition against American Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

This weekend's two duals mark the start of a three-dual homestand for the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh last competed at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals in Nashville, Tenn., where the Mountain Hawks squared off against top 10-ranked Illinois and Iowa State. Graduate student Sheldon Seymour led the way for Lehigh, going 2-0 against ranked opponents to move to 8-0 on the season. Both of Lehigh's opponents competed at the Southern Scuffle last weekend. Cornell had one champion among its place winners, while American had a finalist and two total place winners. The Mountain Hawks have won the last three home duals against Cornell and all 11 previous duals against American.

Saturday's dual versus Cornell is the White Out, presented by CB Construction.

Lehigh faced a pair of top 10 opponents Dec. 21 at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tenn. The Mountain Hawks fell 24-12 to No. 10 Illinois and then 26-11 to No. 3 Iowa State. Lehigh won three bouts in both duals, with graduate student Sheldon Seymour leading the way by going 2-0 at 125 with a pair of ranked victories, knocking off Illinois' Spencer Moore and Iowa State's Stevo Poulin. Junior Rylan Rogers (184) and senior Nathan Taylor (285) picked up Lehigh's other two wins against the Fighting Illini, while seniors Carter Bailey (141) and Max Brignola (165) accounted for the other two wins against the Cyclones.

A 2-0 showing against ranked opponents at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals in Nashville lifted graduate student Sheldon Seymour to EIWA Wrestler of the Week honors right before the Christmas holiday. Victories over Spencer Moore (Illinois) and Stevo Poulin (Iowa State) moved Seymour to 8-0 on the season. An EIWA champion and All-American in 2025, Seymour owns an impressive 30-6 mark over the last two seasons and is 17-2 in duals.

Lehigh sent eight wrestlers to the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, Dec. 29-30 at Northwestern. Junior Owen Reinsel led the way, earning a spot on the podium with an eighth place finish at 149. Reinsel was one of four Mountain Hawks to reach the championship quarterfinals, along with Matty Lopes (unattached-133), Dom Federici (174) and Richie Grungo (174). Also competing for the Mountain Hawks at the Midlands were Anthony Evanitsky (unattached-149), Matt Repos (149), Brady Collins (174) and Bekhruz Sadriddinov (174).

Lehigh's lineup could get a boost with the expected returns of sophomores Ryan Crookham and Luke Stanich at 133 and 141, respectively. Both wrestlers won EIWA titles and earned All-America honors in 2024. Crookham started last season 5-0 but has been sidelined for nearly a year due to various injuries. Stanich deferred his eligibility last season and won a U20 World Championship in August, but has been recovering from an injury suffered while winning his world title.
Six Lehigh wrestlers appear in the latest rankings from InterMat, The Open Mat and WrestleStat, while five Mountain Hawks appear in the FloWrestling rankings. Lehigh has four wrestlers ranked by both Amateur Wrestling News. Lineup bookends Sheldon Seymour (125) and Nathan Taylor (285) are both ranked in the top 10 across the board. Sophomore Logan Rozynski (157) and senior Max Brignola (165) also appear in all five polls. Junior Ryan Crookham (133) and sophomore Luke Stanich (141) returned to The Open Mat rankings ahead of potential returns to Lehigh's lineup.

Cornell enters Saturday's dual at 1-3. The Big Red were also at the Collegiate Wrestling Duals in Nashville, going 1-1 with a victory over Little Rock and a loss to Illinois. Last weekend, Cornell competed at the Southern Scuffle, where the Big Red finished seventh. Vince Cornella won the title at 141 and was named Ivy League Wrestler of the Week. Seven Cornell wrestlers appear in the latest InterMat rankings, led by Jaxon Joy (149) and Simon Ruiz (174) who are both ranked second. Cornella is ranked sixth at 141 while Meyer Shapiro (157) is also ranked in the top 10. Mike Grey is in his fifth season as head coach at his alma mater.

Cornell serves as Lehigh's oldest dual opponent as the Brown and White wrestled its first ever dual against the Big Red in 1910. In terms of number of duals, Cornell ranks third behind Penn State and Navy for Lehigh, with Saturday's dual set to be No. 103 in the series. Lehigh leads 64-35-3. Lehigh has won four of the last six duals in the series and the last three in Bethlehem.

American is 4-5 in duals this season, including wins over Michigan State and CSU Bakersfield last month. The Eagles competed at the Southern Scuffle last weekend and had five place winners, highlighted by a runner-up finish from Caleb Campos at 184. Campos (No. 20) is one of two ranked Eagles along with Maximillian Leete, who is ranked 15th at 133. Leete finished fourth at the Southern Scuffle, while JJ Peace (125), Raymond Lopez (133) and Emmanuel Ulrich (285) all finished seventh. Jason Borrelli is in his fifth season as American's head coach.

Lehigh and American meet for the 12th time. The series resumed last January after a five-year hiatus. The Mountain Hawks have won all 11 previous duals, dating back to the 2003-04 season, with an average margin of 30.5-10. The Eagles are visiting Bethlehem for the seventh time and the second consecutive season. Lehigh and American are Patriot League rivals in most other sports and Patriot Division foes within the EIWA.

Lehigh closes out its three-match homestand on Saturday, Jan. 17, when the Mountain Hawks host Navy in the 106th meeting of Lehigh's second most-contested dual series. The following day, the Mountain Hawks will return to the road to face Princeton.
