BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Through 33 seasons, more than 600 games, three Patriot League championships and five NCAA tournament appearances, Lehigh men's head soccer coach Dean Koski has seen it all. Despite all the accomplishments and the legacy Koski has built at Lehigh, it may have never been possible without one simple recommendation.
Following his graduation from West Chester in 1980, Koski was given the opportunity to coach summer camps at Moorestown Friends School in New Jersey for two years. The camps were run by Bob Seddon, head soccer and baseball coach at the University of Pennsylvania. The headmaster of Moorestown Friends reached out to Seddon one summer asking if he had any recommendations on a potential hire for a soccer coach and physical education teacher at the school. Without hesitation, Seddon recommended the headmaster hire Koski.
"I got a phone call from the headmaster, and I was offered the job without an interview or meeting just off of Bob's recommendation," said Koski. "I don't think I would be here coaching at Lehigh today if it wasn't for his recommendation."
Seddon's accomplishments speak for themselves. He is Penn baseball's all-time winningest coach, collecting more than 600 wins from 1971-2005. Seddon holds the highest winning percentage of any coach in Penn men's soccer history, coaching from 1968-86. Seddon helped draw a crowd of 11,500 for a match between Penn and Harvard in 1971, which at the time was the highest-attended collegiate soccer match ever.

"[Bob] carries himself with such humility," said Koski. "When he started the soccer day camps [at Moorestown Friends], they were the first day camps in the country and were extremely successful. When you talk to him, he couldn't be more gracious and humble, and you would never know that he carried the successes that he had and the role that he had at Penn."
Now at 90 years old, Seddon returns to the sidelines to join Koski and the Lehigh men's soccer coaching staff as honorary coach on Tuesday against Saint Joseph's.
"Bob is somebody who was influential in my coaching career at a really young age, and I want to make sure that he knows that," said Koski. "Bringing him to Lehigh to be an honorary coach and sit on the bench is my way of thanking him for the influence he had on my life."
At halftime of Tuesday's game, Seddon will be honored with a special video tribute from Koski. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
"For any coach fortunate enough to be in a career for over three decades, it's important to look back and recognize the people who shaped that journey," Koski said. "Whether it's inviting them back to a game, making a call, or writing a note, too often mentors like Coach Seddon don't realize the influence they've had on someone. I would encourage any coach with accumulated years in this profession to honor their past and the people who influenced it".
