Second Half Goals Push Lehigh Past Saint Joseph's 3-2

10/14/2025 9:02:00 PM | Men's Soccer

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men's soccer returned to the Ulrich Sports Complex on Tuesday evening for a midweek tilt against the Saint Joseph's Hawks. A shorthanded Mountain Hawks team rode two second half goals to a 3-2 victory over the Hawks.

"A win is a win in Division-I soccer," said Ingrassia Family men's head soccer coach Dean Koski. "Guys stepped into starting roles that haven't started at all and did really well. We didn't have a big bench today, so the guys who played the bulk of the minutes did a nice job for us today."

Lehigh (6-4-3) played thin on Tuesday night, only utilizing two reserve players in the entire game. Saint Joseph's (5-5-3) netted the game's first goal in the 28th minute when Herman Reffsgaard deflected his own shot into the back of the net. The Mountain Hawks responded shortly after with a strike from sophomore Aiden Gonzalez, his second goal in as many games. Although Lehigh took seven shots and generated five corners in the first half, the two teams entered the locker room knotted up 1-1.

Despite being outshot by Saint Joseph's 7-3 in the second half, Lehigh managed to find a game-winner. Sophomore Bora Turker drew a penalty shot in the 52nd minute that junior Thomas Robertson took and made, marking his third penalty shot goal of the year. Sophomore Shea Coughlin then connected with the back of the net on an assist from Gonzalez in the 74th minute, marking the first goal of his career. The Hawks managed to a late 89th minute goal but were unable to find an equalizer in the final minute of play.

Saint Joseph's tallied 11 shots and eight on goal compared to Lehigh's ten shots and eight on goal. Gonzalez finished the night with a goal and an assist on three shots. Noah Levy, Giacomo Zizza, Robertson, Coughlin, Ryan Mundy and Yusef Gueye provided Lehigh's other shot attempts.

"It's always nice to score three goals, but I think we left a couple on the table," said Koski. "I'm less concerned about our ability to create chances and more focused on how we need to defend our box in critical moments, and we'll get better at that."

Sophomore goalkeeper Anton Kinnunen made five saves in Tuesday's win.

"Anton was good tonight. He made the saves that we needed him to make, and that's what we know he's capable of doing," said Koski.

Legendary Penn coach and Coach Koski's mentor Bob Seddon sat on the Lehigh bench as an honorary coach. The 90-year-old Seddon was honored at halftime with a special message on the video board delivered by Koski.

"This was certainly one of my more memorable games having [Bob] here and being able to honor him appropriately," said Koski. "It was a special night for me, it was a special night for him, and I'm glad we got the win on this special night. Now, it's on to Bucknell."

The Mountain Hawks return to Patriot League play from the Ulrich Sports Complex on Saturday, October 18 at 1 p.m. to take on Bucknell.
