Lehigh Drops Midweek Match To Delaware 3-1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men's soccer returned to the Ulrich Sports Complex on Tuesday evening for a midweek clash with the undefeated Delaware Blue Hens. The Mountain Hawks suffered their third loss of the season, falling 3-1 to the Blue Hens.
"Delaware showed why they're undefeated and are having the season they are, they're a really good team," said Ingrassia Family men's head soccer coach Dean Koski. "These are how we learn and how we get better. Our focus now needs to be on Holy Cross."
Lehigh (4-3-3) faced a Delaware (9-0-1) team that has yet to suffer a loss on the season, and it showed in the first half. The Blue Hens got on the board within the first ten minutes, as Marius Stenner scored on assists from Jan Schroeder and Mikey Johnson in the 10th minute. Delaware extended their lead in the 39th minute to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room. Delaware out-shot Lehigh 8-3 in the first half.
The Mountain Hawks got one back early in the second half, as senior Yusef Gueye scored his team-leading third goal of the season off an assist from first-year Luciano Larrea. The Mountain Hawks continued to fight into the second half, but a second goal by Stenner put a stop to Lehigh's comeback effort. Lehigh was once again out-shot in the second half by Delaware 10-1.
"We're a team that isn't afraid to play from behind, and we've shown that all season," said Koski. "Going down 2-0 makes it hard on ourselves, but we know that we can find goals. What you can't do is win games at this level when you give up three goals."
Gueye, Giacomo Zizza, Landon Bealer and Aiden Gonzalez registered Lehigh's shots in the match. Delaware tallied 18 total shots with nine on goal while Lehigh posted four shots with two coming on goal. The Blue Hens also generated six corner opportunities to Lehigh's one.
"We have to be good in our individual defending moments in our final third," said Koski. "There were opportunities for us to press them higher or win the ball in higher areas of the field, and we didn't do a good job there. You can only defend back there for so long before good teams like Delaware are going to punish you for that."
Goalkeeper Anton Kinnunen tied his career-high with six saves in the match.
The Mountain Hawks will resume the Patriot League season on Sunday, October 5 at 2 p.m. to take on the Holy Cross Crusaders at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
