Robertson's Hat Trick Leads Lehigh Past Holy Cross 3-1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men's soccer was back in action on Sunday afternoon as they welcomed the Holy Cross Crusaders to the Ulrich Sports Complex. A hat trick from junior Thomas Robertson helped guide the Mountain Hawks to a 3-1 win and first-place position in the Patriot League.
"Going in at halftime level was a little frustrating, but I think the guys responded well in the second half and played the way I'd like us to play for 90 minutes," said Ingrassia Family men's head soccer coach Dean Koski. "At the end of the day, getting three points, particularly at home, is important."
It didn't take long for Robertson to get the scoring started for Lehigh (5-3-3, 3-0-1 PL), as he scored in the second minute off a beautiful pass from Landon Bealer. Holy Cross (3-5-4, 0-2-2 PL) got on the board in the 20th minute when Cayden Walton headed in a free kick from Thomas Mancuso, and the two teams entered the locker room tied 1-1 at half.
Roberston generated another opportunity in the 58th minute on a breakaway opportunity in the box, resulting in a Lehigh penalty shot. The junior from Chapel Hill, N.C. sent the penalty kick past goalkeeper Mateo Buyu to give the Mountain Hawks the lead. Three minutes later, sophomore Bora Turker was fouled in the box, allowing Roberston to take and make another penalty shot to secure his hat trick and a 3-1 win for Lehigh.
"Anytime that you can drive defenders in the box, you've got to," said Koski. "It's good when you can get into the box and try to make defenders defend you, and I thought we did a good job with that."
Robertson finished the day with three goals and four shots on goal. Sophomore Giacomo Zizza, senior Yusef Gueye, senior Trey Sheeler and sophomore Aiden Gonzalez also recorded shots for the Mountain Hawks.
"I was really happy for Tommy," said Koski. "He works really hard in training. For him to find three goals today, I'm not surprised by it, but that's what Tommy can do. If he can keep doing that for us, it's going to be really helpful moving forward."
Sophomore goalkeeper Anton Kinnunen made two saves on the afternoon.
Lehigh now sits in first place in the Patriot League with ten points. The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 11 at 1 p.m. against second-place American University in Washington, D.C.
"Anytime that you're in the top half of the league at this time of year is a positive thing, but we also don't want to get ahead of ourselves. We'll take it one game at a time, and American is the next game up. I'm happy that we are where we are, but we still have work to do."
