BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh women's basketball rolled to its fifth straight victory with a 74-66 victory over Loyola Sunday afternoon at Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks improved to 11-3 overall (2-0 Patriot League) and 7-0 at home this season. The Greyhounds fell to 6-7 (0-2 PL).Â
"Loyola is a tough team," said head coach Addie Micir. "They're never going to go away. They're fearless, they're relentless and they really challenge us in a lot of different ways. That's what makes this league so fun, night in and night out. You might build a lead, but it's not safe. I'm really proud of how our girls responded."
Senior guard Ella Stemmer led the way with 19 points apiece. Stemmer hit five three-pointers on Sunday, tying her season-high for the fourth time this season. Fifth-year senior wing Maddie Albrecht also finished in double figures, tallying 18 points.Â
Lehigh led by as many as 22 points on Sunday. Sophomore Whitney Lind put Lehigh up 51-29 with 3:02 left in the third quarter, but the Greyhounds would start to chip away at Lehigh's lead, going on a 10-2 run to close out the quarter.Â
Loyola continued to trim at Lehigh's lead in the fourth quarter. The Greyhounds used an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter to get within single digits. Laura Salmeron scored a driving layup with 36 seconds left to cut the Mountain Hawks lead to 66-62, but senior guard Colleen McQuillen took over and scored six of Lehigh's final eight points from the charity stripe in the remaining seconds. Â
Lehigh had a 32-23 lead at halftime after holding Loyola to eight made field goals in the first 20 minutes. The Mountain Hawks led 21-11 at the end of the first frame after having their best shooting performance in the opening 10 minutes, going 7-of-11 (63.6%) from the field.Â
The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 89-of-47 (38.3%) from the field and 12-of-33 (36.4%) from long range. Loyola shot 23-of-54 (42.6%) and 3-of-17 from deep (17.6%). Lehigh recorded 13 assists on Sunday. McQuillen finished with a game-high four assists and sophomore guard Gracyn Lovette added three assists.Â
The Mountain Hawks held a 37-29 advantage in rebounds and an 11-9 edge in offensive rebounds.Â
Koi Sims finished with 18 points to lead the way for Loyola.Â
Sunday's game was a chippy one that featured a combined 55 free throws between the two teams. Lehigh shot 26-of-31 (83.9%) from the charity stripe and Loyola shot 17-of-24 (70.8%).Â
"Free throws were very key," Micir said. "You need to knock them down when teams start fouling. I love our confidence in stepping to the line. Ella missed one, and then she went to the line and made two more. That's the type of resilience that we want."
Next up, Lehigh will take host Colgate on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Stabler Arena. Wednesday's game will be aired on ESPN+.
