Lehigh Takes On Loyola Maryland In First Road Patriot League Game

1/4/2025 2:45:00 PM | Men's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After beginning Patriot League play with a comeback overtime victory over Bucknell, Lehigh men's basketball will play its first away game of the league slate on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks will take on the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds at 1 p.m. from Reitz Arena.

Loyola (5-7, 0-1 PL) leads Lehigh (6-6, 1-0 PL) in the all-time series 17-15, but the Mountain Hawks hold a 12-11 advantage over the Greyhounds since they joined the Patriot League in 2013-14. The Mountain Hawks swept the season series in 2023-24, picking up an 88-76 road win on January 6 and a 75-70 victory at Stabler Arena on February 17.

If Lehigh wins, they would earn their seventh win of the season and improve to 2-0 in Patriot League play. In addition, the Mountain Hawks would go over .500 for the first time this season.

Down by as many as 20 points late in the second half, the Mountain Hawks rallied to force overtime and pulled out a 66-64 win over Bucknell to open the league slate 1-0. Nasir Whitlock starred in 27 minutes off the bench for Lehigh, posting a career-high 20 points on 7-10 shooting and a 3-4 mark from distance. Whitlock knocked down a baseline jumper to force overtime and the go-ahead three in overtime to seal the victory. His backcourt classmate Cam Gillus was also a catalyst in Lehigh's comeback, scoring 16 points to go along with five rebounds, a career-high five assists and three steals. Keith Higgins Jr. was steady as always for the Mountain Hawks, scoring 15 points with six rebounds and three made triples.

The Greyhounds enter Sunday's contest following a narrow 74-72 loss to Holy Cross in the Patriot League opener. Loyola has lost its last three games, falling to Hampton and DePaul in their final two non-league contests. The team sits at 5-7 in head coach Josh Loeffler's first season at the helm of the program. The Greyhounds are led in scoring by senior Milos Ilic, who nearly averages a double-double at 14.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. The two other Greyhounds averaging double-figures are sophomore Jordan Stiemke (12.3 ppg) and Jacob Theodosiou (11.8 ppg).

Following Sunday's game, the Mountain Hawks will head to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on the defending Patriot League champion Colgate Raiders on Wednesday, January 8 at 7 p.m.

Sunday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
