Shorthanded Mountain Hawks Drop 80-74 Decision At Loyola

1/5/2025 4:28:00 PM | Men's Basketball

BALTIMORE – Lehigh men's basketball traveled south for their first road Patriot League game on Sunday to take on the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds. A shorthanded Mountain Hawks team fought tooth and nail but ultimately fell by a score of 80-74.

The win gives Loyola (6-7, 1-1 PL) their first Patriot League triumph of the season and sets the all-time series against Lehigh (6-7, 1-1 PL) at 18-15 in favor of the Greyhounds. The Mountain Hawks were without Keith Higgins Jr. in Sunday's loss, who missed his first start of the season. Bube Momah was also inactive for Lehigh.

Both teams got off to rather slow starts in the first half, as Lehigh and Loyola combined for only two field goals in the first 4:30 of the game. A 7-0 run with buckets from Tyler Whitney-Sidney, Cam Gillus and Tommy Conniff set the score at 11-6 before a 14-0 run in under four minutes catapulted the Greyhounds to a 20-11 lead. Lehigh slowly but surely chipped away at the lead until a Joshua Ingram step-back triple tied the contest at 24-24 with under six to play in the half. The Mountain Hawks gained the lead several times down the stretch, but Loyola scored five unanswered in the final 1:19 to take a 37-34 lead into the locker room.

The Mountain Hawks began the second frame well with two unanswered buckets to take a 38-37 lead, however, the Greyhounds quickly responded and regained an advantage they would not relinquish. Lehigh was able to cut the lead to three at 54-51 with 9:47 remaining, but the post presence of Milos Ilic and a career-night from guard Jordan Stiemke proved to be too much for the Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh shot 40.0% (24-60) and 41.7% (10-24) from three compared to Loyola's 48.1% (25-52) and 23.1% (3-13). The Greyhounds won the battle on the boards 39-29 and also shot a higher efficiency from the free throw line (72.7% to 81.8%).

Leading the way offensively for the Mountain Hawks was Gillus, who scored 25 points with a career-high eight rebounds and a career-high six steals. It was Gillus' sixth double-digit scoring output of the season and second time scoring 20 or more points on the year.

Whitney-Sidney was also effective for Lehigh, scoring 22 points while hitting 8-11 from the free throw line. Lehigh's third double-digit scorer was Ingram, who scored 12 points with a game-high four assists.

Stiemke posted a career-best 25 points with six rebounds while Ilic added 18 for the Greyhounds.

The Mountain Hawks will be on the road again on Wednesday evening, traveling to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on the Colgate Raiders. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cotterell Court.
