Albrecht's Career-High Night Pushes Lehigh Past Navy

1/29/2025 10:31:00 PM | Women's Basketball

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Behind a career-high 31 points from fifth-year wing Maddie Albrecht, Lehigh women's basketball rolled to its sixth straight win, defeating Navy 87-66 Wednesday night at Alumni Hall. The Mountain Hawks moved to 17-4 (8-1 PL) and the Midshipmen dropped to 14-6 (6-3 PL). Lehigh's six-game win streak is tied for its longest since the 2019-20 season. Halfway through the Patriot League schedule, the Mountain Hawks are in first place in the Patriot League. Army and Holy Cross are a game behind Lehigh.

"Navy is a really good team," said head coach Addie Micir. "They can score in bunches, and they came out really, really confident, and something we said to the team was that we were really proud that we kept doing us. We kept putting on ball pressure, we kept moving as one defensively, and I thought we had really active hands on the defensive end. Our defensive effort is what got it done."

Albrecht was unconscious on Wednesday, shooting 11-of-15 from the field while going 6-of-7 from beyond the arc. Albrecht scored all 31 of her points in the first three quarters. She was one of three players to finish in double figures.

"Maddie makes hard things look really easy," Micir said. "Yes, she scored 31 points, but she also did it on the defensive end. I love how confident she shoots the ball, and I love that our team looks for her. Her ability to get to the rack is unbelievable. And my favorite part is that she came back for this, not the points, but the wins."

Senior guard Ella Stemmer finished with 15 points and junior forward Lily Fandre chipped in 10 points.

The second half was the difference on Wednesday with Lehigh outscoring Navy 41-20 after both teams were deadlocked at 46 at halftime. The first quarter was also deadlocked at 25 after Colleen McQuillen netteed a buzzer-beater half-court shot as time expired.

Albrecht's layup gave Lehigh the 46-44 lead with 16 seconds left in the first half and Navy's Julia Almedia nailed a last-second jumper to tie the score at 46 heading into the second half.

Stemmer put Lehigh back on top 55 seconds into the third quarter and the Mountain Hawks would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the game. Lehigh led by as many as 16 points in the third quarter after Stemmer nailed a three-pointer with 1:41 remaining, but Navy closed out the quarter on a 10-0 run.

Leading 66-60 heading into the fourth quarter, the Mountain Hawks stood strong, holding the Midshipmen to just six points in the final 10 minutes.

Lehigh shot 29-of-56 from the field (51.8%) and 8-of-21 from long range (38.1%). Navy shot 23-of-66 (34.8%) from the field and 7-of-21 (33.3%) from deep.

McQuillen dished out a game-high of five assists and four steals. Sophomore guard Gracyn Lovette finished with eight points and two steals. McQuillen, senior forward Meghan O'Brien and first-year Belle Bramer all finished with six points apiece.

Zanai Barnett-Gay led the way for Navy with 19 points.

Next up, the Mountain Hawks will take on Holy Cross on Feb. 1 at home at 5 p.m. in Lehigh's National Girls and Women in Sports Day and Pink Out Game.
