Lehigh Uses Strong Fourth Quarter to Down Loyola 54-43

1/18/2025 8:21:00 PM | Women's Basketball

BALTIMORE - Lehigh women's basketball used a strong fourth quarter to push past Loyola, picking up a 54-43 win over the Greyhounds Saturday evening at Reitz Arena. With the win, the Mountain Hawks improved to 14-4 (5-1 PL) and Loyola dropped to 7-10 (1-5 PL). Lehigh also secured the season sweep over Loyola after defeating the Greyhounds 74-66 on Jan. 5.

Down 34-30 at the end of the third frame, Lehigh outscored the Greyhounds 24-9 in the final 10 minutes to secure their third straight win. Tied 43-43 with 2:33 minutes remaining, the Mountain Hawks would end the game on an 11-0 run.

Fifth-year senior wing Maddie Albrecht would score the go-ahead layup with 2:30 left in the game and Lehigh held onto the lead for the remainder of the game. Senior guard Colleen McQuillen was instrumental down the stretch, scoring eight of her nine points in the fourth quarter. McQuillen also recorded a game-high of three steals.

"Colleen stepped up when we needed her most," said head coach Addie Micir. The three-pointer at the end of the buzzer where she took someone off the bounce, and I even gave her credit on the defensive end. Her activity in the back of our zone really made it really hard, so I want to give her props for her push at the end, but who held down the fort for us the whole way was Lily Fandre."

Fandre was one rebound away from finishing with a double-double as she tallied a team-high of 15 points and nine rebounds.

"We've been waiting for her to put the team on her back offensively, and she can do it. She showed up big with 15 points."

Albrecht was also nearing a double-double, tallying 12 points and eight rebounds.

Lehigh struggled offensively in the first half, making seven field goals in the first 20 minutes. The Greyhounds, who scored the game's first eight points on Saturday, held a 22-18 advantage at halftime.

"The message at halftime was that shooters shoot," Micir said. "We were getting open looks, but we had to shoot them. Our offense is predicated on that, and when you shoot it, you have a chance at an offensive rebound. I thought we turned it over too much because we got a little bit nervous to shoot."

Both teams struggled to take care of the basketball with the Greyhounds committing 20 turnovers while Lehigh finished with 16.

Lehigh held the lead for just 4:53 on Saturday, but that would be all that was needed. The Greyhounds led for 33:05.

The Mountain Hawks shot 19-of-52 (36.5%) from the field on Saturday and 5-of-24 from long range (20.8%). The Greyhounds shot 19-of-51 (37.3%) and 1-of-13 from deep (7.7%). Laura Salmeron paced the way for Loyola with a game-high of 18 points.

Rebounds were tied at 34 on Saturday. Sophomore guard Gracyn Lovette finished with seven rebounds, three points, three steals and two assists. Sophomore Whitney Lind chipped in seven points.

Next up, Lehigh will host American on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Stabler Arena. Wednesday's game will be aired on ESPN+.
