BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Winners of its last two games, Lehigh returns to Goodman Stadium Saturday to open a two-game homestand against Princeton on Family Weekend, presented by PSECU. The Mountain Hawks used a late defensive stand to earn a hard-fought 20-17 victory at LIU last weekend. Sophomore linebacker Will Parton made the game-saving run stop on 4th-and-2 allowing Lehigh to run out the clock. Quarterbacks Dante Perri and Hayden Johnson both threw touchdown passes, with Perri's third-quarter 27-yard strike to sophomore Mason Humphrey putting Lehigh ahead for good. Princeton opens its 2024 campaign on Saturday with the Tigers coming off a 5-5 season in 2023.
Â
A total team effort propelled the Mountain Hawks to back-to-back wins for the first time in nearly three years last week at LIU. Offensively, two Lehigh quarterbacks threw touchdown passes while the Mountain Hawks' three touchdowns were scored by three different players. On the other side of the ball, seven different players registered four of more tackles. Prior to the LIU game, the last time Lehigh won back-to-back games was in 2021, when the Mountain Hawks defeated Bucknell, Georgetown and Lafayette in their final three contests.
Â
There were a number of strong individual performances in Lehigh's win over LIU but perhaps no single play was bigger than the fourth-quarter fourth-down stop by sophomore linebacker William Parton. On 4th-and-2 from the Lehigh 40 with just under a minute remaining, Parton came up to stuff Pat Bowen for just a one-yard gain, giving the Mountain Hawks the ball back on downs. Parton made five tackles against the Sharks as part of Lehigh's linebacker rotation. He appeared in 10 games as a first-year, finishing with 16 tackles, including 10 tackles and a sack at Fordham.
Â
A strong rushing game has become a hallmark of the Lehigh football program in 14 games under Kevin Cahill. The Mountain Hawks have eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in their last 10 games, dating back to last season. So far this year, Lehigh has two of its top three rushing performances under Cahill, with the Mountain Hawks rushing for a 172 yards in the opener at Army and a best-under-Cahill 190 yards in the win over Wagner. Lehigh leads the Patriot League in rushing, averaging 166 yards per game. Sophomore Luke Yoder leads the way with 209 yards on 42 carries, a 5.0 yard per carry average. Yoder has scored a touchdown in each of Lehigh's three games this season. Behind Yoder, Lehigh's next four leading rushers are first-years, with running backs Jaden Green and Aaron Crossley and quarterbacks Hayden Johnson and Matt Machalik combining for 280 yards while averaging 4.6 yards per carry.
Â
Wide receiver Mason Humphrey has come into his own in his sophomore season, leading Lehigh with 10 catches for 145 yards through Lehigh's first three games. Humphrey capped Lehigh's scoring with a 37-yard touchdown catch in the win over Wagner and followed that up by hauling in the go-ahead 27-yard touchdown in the third quarter of the Mountain Hawks' victory at LIU. Lehigh's top big-play receiving threat, Humphrey averaged 17.4 yards per catch as a first-year with 20 receptions for 348 yards. He scored his first career touchdown at Colgate last November.
Â
Princeton kicks off its 2024 campaign Saturday at Goodman Stadium. The Tigers are coming off a 5-5 season in 2023 that saw them go 4-3 against Ivy League opponents. Princeton was picked fourth in the Ivy League's preseason poll. Offensive linemen Nicholas Hilliard and Tommy Matheson, running back John Volker, defensive lineman Collin Taylor, and defensive back Mason Armstead were recently selected as Princeton's captains for the 2024 season. Volker was Princeton's leading rusher a season ago with 447 yards and seven touchdowns. Quarterback Blake Stenstrom has graduated, with senior Blaine McAllister or junior Blaine Hipa expected to step in. Hipa did see limited action in four games last season.
Â
This is the 63rd meeting in the series, with Princeton leading 43-17-2. The Mountain Hawks have won 13 of the past 20 matchups, including five of the last nine. Princeton has won the last three meetings after Lehigh won five of the previous six. These two teams met for the first time in 1887.

Saturday's game kicks off just after noon from Goodman Stadium. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-758-4263 during business hours.
Â
