Leary Announces 12 Newcomers To Class Of 2028

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Peter E. Bennett '63 head baseball coach Sean Leary, now entering his 30th season at the helm of the program, has announced the signing of 12 first-years to the class of 2028.

"Coach Pat Knight did a tremendous job assembling our latest recruiting class," said Leary. "With graduation and the recent MLB Draft, there will be opportunities for this group to make an immediate impact. We are very excited for their arrival this fall and to assist in their development heading into the '25 spring season."

The 2028 class boasts student-athletes from six different states, including Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana, New Jersey and Connecticut. The 12 newcomers will join a Mountain Hawk team that earned four All-Patriot League nods and saw the team pick up wins over #20 Iowa and Michigan State.
Cadeyrn Ahearn – P/1B – Woodbine, Md. – Centennial
Standing at 6'4, Ahearn brings a big presence as both a pitcher and position player to the Mountain Hawks. In addition to earning County Pitcher of the Year in 2021, Ahearn was also a four-time All-County Player and a three-time Preseason All-State selection. As a batter, Ahearn posted a batting average above .500, a .554 on-base percentage and a 1.010 OPS. He was also a member of his high school's wrestling team and was named to the honor roll every semester of high school. Ahearn comes from a family of athletes, as his mother played lacrosse and field hockey at Hofstra, his sister played lacrosse at Maryland and his brother currently plays baseball for Penn.
Edwin Betances – 2B – Bronx, N.Y. – Iona Preparatory High School
Betances comes to Lehigh from Iona Prep and Team Crush Baseball in New York. The second baseman earned several accolades, including an honorable mention in 2023 and a selection to the Lohud 'Nine Who Shine'. In the classroom, Betances was a National Honor Society member and was in the National English Honor Society. His father was also collegiate baseball player, spending his playing days at Lehman College.
Peter Carini – LHP – New York, N.Y. – Stuyvesant High School
Carini joins the Mountain Hawks after playing for both Stuyvesant High School and Choate Rosemary Hall as well as the New Jersey 9ers travel baseball team. He was unfortunately injured during his final high school season, but the 6'0 left-handed pitcher impressed earlier in his career. His father was also a collegiate athlete, playing football and lacrosse at the College of Wooster.
Noah Gyauch-Quirk – P/OF/DH – Bethlehem, Pa. – Liberty
Gyauch-Quirk won't have to move very far when he arrives on campus in the fall, as he is a Bethlehem native and graduate of nearby Liberty High School. He enjoyed an immensely successful career as both a pitcher and a hitter, earning accolades such as First Team All-Eastern Penn Conference, First Team All-Division, Morning Call Co-Pitcher of the Year, three-time Morning Call First Team All-Area, two-time lehighvalleylive.com Baseball Player of the Year and many more. His team was a state runner-up in 2022 and won the Pennsylvania District XI 6A Championship three times. Gyauch-Quirk also got the opportunity to compete in the MLB Jr. Home Run Derby in Atlanta following the World Series in 2021. He is also a Lehigh legacy, as his father attended undergraduate and graduate school while his mother earned a graduate degree in Bethlehem.
Robert Kleckner – OF – Lansdale, Pa. – Perkiomen School
Kleckner joins the Lehigh baseball program by way of Lansdale, Pennsylvania and Perkiomen School, where he excelled in the outfield. He was a two-time Perfect Game Preseason Underclass All-American, two-time All-Conference Team selection and a two-time All-Area Team selection. Kleckner was also a member of the varsity golf team for four years, winning back-to-back league championships. Her comes from an athletic family, as Kleckner's father is part of the PGA and is a professional golf player while his mother played lacrosse and field hockey at Susquehanna.
Cole Kochanowicz – RHP – Wyndmoor, Pa. – La Salle College High School
Kochanowicz brings an impressive resume to Lehigh after being a four-year varsity pitcher for La Salle College High School. He posts career marks of 54 appearances, 110 innings pitched, 126 strikeouts, 1.39 ERA, 16 saves and a win/loss record of 12-3. Kochanowicz's teams were highly successful during his time there, as he was a 2021 PIAA 6A State Champion, 2021 Philadelphia Catholic League Champion, 2024 PIAA 6A State Runner-Up and a 2024 Philadelphia Catholic League Champion. In the classroom, Kochanowicz was the La Salle Principal Scholarship award winner, a four-year member of the honor roll and graduated high school with a 4.3 weighted GPA. He also comes from a family of athletes, as his father played baseball at Penn State while his sister played field hockey at La Salle University.
Jake Mulvehill – LHP – South Bend, Ind. – John Adams
Mulvehill, the 6'0 lefty from South Bend, Indiana, brings an accomplished resume to J. David Walker Field. He was twice named MVP of his team at John Adams High School and was a member of the varsity team all four years. Mulvehill was also a Second Team All-Conference selection as a junior and First Team honoree as a senior. He was also awarded the Xavier Winston Award, which is given to a player at John Adams who displays excellent performance and character. Mulvehill was a two-time sectional champion and played for a travel team that was ranked top ten nationally in the preseason (PRP Mambas). In the classroom, he earned many accolades, including Academic All-Conference and the Kiwanis Award (distinguished student-athlete in South Bend area).
Connor Owens – P – Cherry Hill, N.J. – Cherry Hill High School West
Owens shined on the mound for Cherry Hill West, pitching in numerous clutch moments for his team. The 6'0 pitcher threw in the Olympic Conference semifinal and championship games to help his team win the conference. In the classroom, Owens was both a National Honor Society and honor roll member.
Max Treonze – P – Hillsborough, N.J. – Rutgers Preparatory School
Treonze joins the Mountain Hawks after a decorated high school career on the mound. The 5'11 pitcher posted a 0.17 ERA with 77 strikeouts as a junior and a 1.19 ERA with 62 strikeouts as a senior. He was a two-time First Team Skyland Conference selection, a First Team and Third Team All-Prep Team selection, three-time First Team Prep B selection and a First Team All-Area selection as a senior. Treonze is a Lehigh legacy, as his both his parents attended the school. His father, Keith, is a former Lehigh baseball player himself.
Reid Uccello – 2B/SS – Medford, N.J. – Shawnee
Uccello brings an impressive athletic and academic resume to the Lehigh baseball program after playing at Shawnee High School and the South Jersey Young Guns. He was a two-time First Team All-Conference member, two-time Second Team All-State selection, two-time First Team South Jersey selection and a two-time First Team Group 3 All-State selection. In addition, Uccello posted a 4.0 GPA all four years in high school and plans to study in the business school at Lehigh. His parents were both athletes at the University of Connecticut, as his father played baseball there and in the Boston Red Sox organization while his mother was a field hockey player.
Zack Wendell – INF/OF – Easton, Pa. – Gill St. Bernard's School
Wendell, an infielder/outfielder from nearby Easton, Pennsylvania, played his high school ball at Gill St. Bernard's School in New Jersey. He earned First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Prep B honors as well as a NJ Senior All-Star Game selection. In the classroom, Wendell earned Spanish honors society and honor roll recognitions and plans to major in business management at Lehigh. Baseball has been a prevalent part of his family's life, as his father Mike played collegiately at Guilford College.
Ian Wirtz – C – Cheshire, Conn. – Choate Rosemary Hall
Wirtz joins the Lehigh baseball program from Cheshire, Connecticut, where he played catcher for both Choate Rosemary Hall and the CT Mets travel team. He garnered several accolades during his career, including First Team All-SCC, two-time First Team All-Founders, All-NEPSAC honorable mention and was named the Founders League Co-Player of the Year. Wirtz also excelled in the classroom, as he plans to major in engineering at Lehigh after being a three-time honor roll and six-time Dean's List recipient.
