BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh right-handed pitcher Alex Bouchard was drafted 417th overall in the 14th round of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft by the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday afternoon.
Bouchard becomes the 20th MLB Draft selection in program history. He joins teammate Rafe Perich as a draftee this year, who was taken in the seventh round by the Texas Rangers on Monday. Bouchard and Perich's selections mark the fourth time in the last six drafts that two Lehigh players have been drafted (Levi Stoudt and Jason Reynolds in 2019, Mason Black and Matt Svanson in 2021, Adam Retzbach and Carlos Torres in 2022).
"Bouch is such an amazing story," said Peter E. Bennett '63 head baseball coach Sean Leary. "The leaps he's made in the past two years are phenomenal. His work ethic and determination have led him to this moment."
After playing his first-year season at Division III Dickinson College, Bouchard transferred to Lehigh in the fall of 2022. In his first season with the Mountain Hawks, Bouchard posted a 4-2 record in 14 appearances with 12 starts and a save while collecting a 3.65 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 49.1 innings pitched. Bouchard opened the 2024 season on fire, striking out 11 batters through his first two starts before an injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
"He, like Perich, brought a positive presence and a smile to every practice, workout and game," said Leary. "Lehigh baseball is blessed to have such wonderful young men representing our program."
Bouchard and Perich will join a list of active Lehigh professional players that includes Carlos Torres, Adam Retzbach, Matt Svanson, Levi Stoudt, and Mason Black, who recently made his MLB debut.
"Lehigh baseball will have another unbelievable ambassador in the professional ranks once Alex joins the Sox," said Leary.
